Ok, I need some boots. Been wearing hiking boots but they're good boots and I don't want to wreck them. Tried my husbands... Alpinestars I think ...but hated the feel of them. Yeah I don't like the look either. So what are my options? What protection exactly do a good pair of boots give? What do the huge chunks of ridiculously coloured plastic do? Some people swear by army boots - But how much protection do they give?

I LOVE these

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120507895420&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I've had 2 pairs now - first pair i destroyed by using them to work on the bike, getting them covered in all sorts and they eventually started to break down, And the second pair i had got ripped apart in my accident.

I'll be buying another set when my GPZ is bac on the road.

Up to you really, depends on budget and if you want to wear tarty stuff Thumbs Up

But yeah, i recommend those.

I wore my combat boots on the bike before - were warm and rigid, would have protected be enough in a crash, but they were a bit stiff for changing gears.

Daytona make by far the best boots in my opinion.

Had my Road Star GTX's for years and they are still completely waterproof and very comfortable.

They are expensive but it's a quality handmade German item...dont rate the sidi stuff at all however many bells whistles fastners colours gagets they manage to fit on them.

Thanks for that. Budget isn't huge. And tarty? How would you define that? Probably not me either way.

In big rigid boots isn't there a danger of transferring all the impact into your knees? Keeping ankle solid but twisting the knee?

Yes, there is a risk. Here's my mate with a low speed tumble whilst wearing MX boots. You might spot that his right leg doesn't quite line up where it should.

The Daytonas cost me £240.

Seems a lot but had them about 5 years and they'll easily last 5 again.

Had some Alpinestars before that £180 and lasted about 4 month.

If you're going to be biking a while, it's worth investing in decent gear.

Mr D - Yup, def tarty and really not me - guess that's part of what I'm struggling with.

Black Knight - Thanks for the tip but really can't justify that much.

Shaggy - OW! Did he recover?

I have crashed quite a lot of times in Army boots and they've done me fine. I tend to wear them for most things as they're fairly versatile - so polished up I can ride to work wearing them with hood trousers and still look pretty smart without changing at all.

Although I have worn them off-road too, I tend to use race/off road boots as the situation requires for activities where I'm more likely to have a more 'gnarly' crash.

Ankle protection is a must if you ask me, imagine lowsiding and dropping your heavy bike on your ankles Sick

Also i had a low speed highside off a roundabout with my boots on and they have an impact absorbing plate that wraps around the heel, i hit the floor quite hard with my heels and these plates shattered doing their job to take the force away from my heels, dread to think how my feet would have been if i were not wearing me boots

I never go anywhere now without my boots on, not even to the shops

Agree with the above - with the force the car hit me, if i wasn't wearing my boots, i would have snapped my ankle.

Seeing the state of the boots after... rather them than me Laughing

Um, Voice of Reason, what's quite a lot of times? I had this weird idea that biking was about trying to stay on a bike but you seem to be suggesting that you spend more time rolling in the road!

I ripped a pair of Army boots kick starting my bike.

If by "recover" you mean metal work, aches, limps and loss of full range of movement, then yes Smile

I'd rather have my tibia and fibula snap again, than have my knee or ankle take the brunt of it.

I think I did the other day to mine too Sad - but it's a bit different situation as they have done fine crashing - I suspect leathers would likely be less strong than the boots in this case.

GertyX:
If you include Hitech Magnums, on the road 30 times at very the least I reckon.
Reckon I've crashed on the road getting on for around sixty times, though have been fairly calm recently.
Obviously off-road and racing crashes would rather bump those figures up!

Point of biking for me is to have fun or get to places quicker Smile.

To be fair, I do full believe that there is no need to crash and you only need to make a fairly minor effort to not do so.
