My bike is due an MOT and needs a little work:

(i) one front fork seal - somewhat borderline but they failed it
(ii) new headset bearings (current ones notchy); and
(iii) chain a little tight

I know I could do this myself but am feeling lazy. I was quoted £180 in total by Chas Bikes for this work.

Does that seem fair (for London)?

Thanks
James

Seems ok it is usually £90 for a pair of forks, you might as well get both changed. Don't forget to get the bushes changed too!

Head bearings usually around £60-80 to get them done inc parts when gaz was around. Not had them done since.

The tight chain can be done by yourself.

I would say that the price isnt far off but it is the max price you should pay.

Fork seals 90ish the pair (not including bushes)
Headstock bearings 70 ish

That price is with aftermarket parts I would think, OEM would bring the price over 180 i reckon (specially if its a honda)

The words London and fairness don't go together in the same sentence, but I suppose you won't get fleeced more elsewhere than at chas bikes.
I've had trouble with them in the past doing work I didn't request and billing me for it, a simple MOT came away with a £260 bill.
On one occasion I took a bike to them and was told it would be ready by end of next day, they kept it there the rest of the week despite several calls from me then telling me it'd be ready soon and finally told me they didn't know what the cause of the problem was and asked me to pay £30 for one hours labour (?)
Shit service and arrogant staff with weird attitudes to their customers there too if you ask me.
You could take your bike to a car place that also does bikes MOTs, less likely to kick up a huff than chas bikes.

I have had the exact opposite experience with Chas Bikes, but I've always only used them for parts and MOT's never any work (though they have been very helpful with minor MOT failiure stuff like chain & cable adjustment and a blown bulb), which incidentally they have been doing for years.

If you want arrogance, ignorance and shitty service done professionally try EC Bate in Dartford. If you can get them to answer the phone that is!

Given they're supposed to be a 'quick fit centre' you'd expect them to sort a carb problem on a gpz500 out in less than five days! They seem to have changed a lot since they were used predominantly by couriers. They didn't even get to the bottom of the issue!

Update - apparently my front forks are bent! Grr. Apparently £300 for new forks.

I might buy some cheapo second hand forks from ebay and get them fitted. Or I may sell the bike...

What the stanchions or the legs?

Fork tubes are usually £110 per pair depending on bike, NTV ones I recall were £45 a piece at one time, if you are going to change fork seals then you're going to have the stanchions out anyway.

It's the stanchions. I'm going round to have a look now - I may try and buy a pair second hand off ebay as I don't think £300 for forks on a £550 bike is really worth it, especially as I can't use the bike for next six months (am off overseas with work).

I'd try getting an MOT at a different place.
