Hello, some background history, I am a new biker, picked up the CG about 6 days ago, had 18925 miles on her. Replaced the oil and spark plug when I got her.

About 375 miles later, I was cruising about 45mph when the bike made a sort of "pop" sound and then started a high pitched rattle and lost power, down to about 30mph in top gear (was 55).

Had to ride the bike home in this condition, it's recovered a bit in power and quietened down but still sounds a lot louder than before. Any ideas what I might have to check?

Sounds like not enough oil and you have fucked it.

Oil level is just shy of 'max' and has been since I got the bike.

Op, how did you check the oil level and is the bike losing any oil or smoking badly?

Wiped off the dipstick and let it rest in without screwing it. There's two notches on it, one for max and for minimum, no oil above max when I do that.

Doesn't seem to be losing oil, it's been 100 miles on that amount. No visible smoke while it's in neutral ticking over.

remove the rocker box cover from the top of the engine and check your valve clearances with the engine cold, also remove your plug and check the colour, white would indicate weak running and a sooty black plug would indicate rich running. Also check the airfilter is intact and clean.

You may find that oil isn't getting around all of the engine. I had a bike that the oil feeder was blocked with crap and so buggered everything.

Valve clearances are both fine, one was about 0.10 but i've tightened it up to 0.08

The air filter's not overly dirty either. :/

I'd be tempted to take the cover off the top of the engine to get access to the piston and barrel and peek inside.

Am I right in saying 'tappets' are the valves I just adjusted? There's more than enough oil in there, nice and clean as well

If I open up the engine, what would I be looking for?

Daft question then, what bolts are you referring to, if I show you a picture.

I'm kind of confused what you mean by the "head" of the engine, the top cover has three bolts and the rest is attached to the exhaust etc I'd have to remove
