Afternoon all Very Happy

after a lot of thought i have decided I would like to start doing track days. I was thinking of buying a VFR 400.

I need to know what the regulations are and what i have to modify on the bike to be able to enter track day.

I also heard that removing the flywheel gives the bike a bit more HP. Obviously I would have to keep the battery charged.

Any help and advice will be great Cheers Thumbs Up

A road legal bike will be fine on a track day.

First off, if you don't have a bike, buy one that's matches your needs.

So, ideally buy one sold for track use - it'll probably be cheaper and have useful mods already done.
Also, I wouldn't worry about going for a few hp more on a track day - it's a trackday, so if you want more power, buy a bike with a bigger engine Smile.

They don't check bikes on trackdays, but you do have to be safe.

what kind of events do you have to use lock wiring for then, if you don't on track days?

for racing.

for trackdays you can take a standard road bike on no probs.

its normally a good idea to take off/fold in mirrors and tape up lights/mirrors but its not compulsory.

only thing that could stop a bike being eligable for trackdays is a noisy exhaust (normally anything above 105db)

apart from that you dont need to do anything.

that said there are a few things that you can do to make it a better trackbike. track fairing, lighter mounts, rearsets, dynojet/pc, exhaust systems, adjustable levers, track bias tyres, sprocket changes etc.. etc.. the list goes on.

but yeh, dont need to do anything specific to be allowed on track

You do for racing, but personally I'd advice sticking to trackdays until you're getting reasonable lap times - just because racing is a load more expensive for a load less track time.

Yes, you do.
A very few accept a race licence, but you have all sorts of issues with that.
Have a look at the FAQ in the racing and trackdays section Thumbs Up.

yes and not a restricted one.

there are some tracks that dont mind but most wont let you on without a full licence or failing that a ACU licence but as G says thats not a given. some will only accept a full road licence.

You can go out on a restricted license provided it's not a circuit owned by MSV. That still leaves a few tracks.

Wouldn't bother removing the fly wheel, and would have said a VFR's not an ideal trackbike due to the 18 inch rear wheel.

I'd look at a CBR600F steelie, early R6, or minitwin for a cheap track bike.

Yeah a few people have said this to me regarding the VFR, I was looking at some CBR's last night and was very supprised at the prices of them. Very reasonable! Very Happy

I looked at the FAQ's and its says if you have done your CBT you are ok to go on most track.

Its all very confuseing. lol

Cheers Guys Very Happy

Some Cheap ZXR400s going round on ebay right now - they make awesome track bikes.

I'd say get one of them if it's what you're looking at - decent for the road but awesome on track...

There's a lot of downsides to the old sports 400s though, like the head gasket on the zxrs tend to fail...

You could look at a 500? GPZ500s aint too bad on track apparently.

But if you're after more power, better off with a sports 600...

Are you over 21?

a 400 is not the best choice of track day bike. a 600 makes a lot more sense Thumbs Up
