Looking for a new CPU what do we think? (socket 775)

Lo all,

I work in IT support but have been out of the loop for a bit.

I am currently running an MSI 780i mobo with an Intel E6750 at stock.

I could overclock but I will need to change my memory as my 800 does not like anything over 3ghz so might as well look at a quad with a higher speed and I can look at changing ram later.

So whats the best bang for buck with Intel these days?

Not looking to change the mobo or anything as I may end up selling the unit to fund an imac within the year.

I have a second hand q6600 and 4gb of Geil ram if you are interested, less clock speed but it is a quad core.

I think the best bang per buck would be a Q9650, but I wouldn't spend my own cash on it.

You could probably get a new board and an I5 for the same money.

Yeah I wouldn't be looking to spend that, that's why I am just looking at a "minor" upgrade.

I can run starcraft II at full everything turned on and the only bit that gets my tits is the loading but I am not willing to fork out for an SSD yet even though I have seen one for £80 on ebuyer for a 64gb

Currently sitting at a stable speed of 4.2Ghz

Cheap as chips too.

as for a q6600 a Very nice cpu but you might find it slower than a e6750 for general use but then you should be able to clock it to 3.2 Very easily and then there rather nippy ( i had one but now in my dads rig) for a dual core a e8600 is nice or a e8500 got a e8600 ES sat at 4.5ghz.


as for a e7400 not hank you the lack of cache makes it a drag no matter how far you clock it if you want daft clocks and cheap i say e5200 had one run at 4.8 on water with my asus p5ews64evo mobo

a safe bet is a e8400 or even a 6850

I've just put my Q6600 back in and am running it at 3.6ghz again (G0 stepping), maxes at 71-degrees under Prime95 (air-cooling). 1066 RAM running at 800 (400FSB, 1:1 ratio). It prefers a 64bit OS though (it runs faster in this than it did in 32-bit XP). 7.4 W7 score. £60 for one is a steal (as long as your MOBO is up for it).

E8400 is also a stonking chip, had mine at 4ghz and there was plenty more to be had, but there's not one being offered for £60.

780i mobo's where never that good in all honesty most nvidia based chipsets since NF4 have been pants. but im sure it would clock to 3.2 eassily. i had my Go @ 4ghz with a tuniq tower 120 amazing chips for the money and your 6750 should pull £40 ish so a cheap upgrade

I had my E6750 @ 3.8 Ghz for a while, but it was running way too hot for my liking. Ended up having it @ 3.2-3.6 depending on the ambient temperature.

Scratch what I said about mine running at 71-degrees under load. It went to 77-degrees on the last test and bells started ringing. After some research it turned out the program I was using to monitor the temps (Coretemp) had the wrong TjMax value inputted (and couldn't be changed). After getting Realtemp (which is what I usually use, I was using Coretemp only so I could run a desktop gadget) and inputting the correct TjMax value my temps are actually 10-degrees lower.

I had that q6600, underwater at idle it was 17deg it never went above 23 under load the temp inside the case was 21 deg.

I had it OC'd at 3 ghz for a while, still it didn't get much above 40 under load. Water cooling for the win, my new i7 is a hot fecker though, that was running at 40 degrees stock under water.

It's amazing the difference decent thermal paste makes, my 8800gts was running at about 80-90 deg under load, I took it apart and replaced all the shitty thermal paste 'sticker things' they use with Artic silver now it runs at 53 under load.
