Two entirely different skill sets. There's allot to learn in both, put it this way, if you swapped a DMC champion with an amazing guitar player for a day, I could guarantee that the DMC champion would have picked up the basics of playing a guitar but the guitair playing wouldn't have got anywhere on the decks.
It's not something you can just learn easily, it takes many years to get anywhere near 'alright' and many more to get to a level like that and therefore I would define it as a specialist skill.

I don't know if you understand what's actually being done there if you watch the routine, some people look at it and just think, sounds like a load of shit but if you actually DJ, you understand how fucking hard them cuts and scratches are and the timing. It takes an obscene amount of skill to do it, there's about 20 different things to do at the same time. |

Ignore hetzer, he doesnt get modern music, and thinks if it cant be played live, it's programming not real music, which has to be made by musicians.
The way I see it, art is all about the image created, whether thats with a paint brush or with a camera. The dutch masters would blur the line between the two, by using a camera obscura to project and image onto canvas, that they would then paint. Cheating ? Maybe but its all about the finished work.

This track is one of my favourites, and it wouldnt be the same without modern production techniques. Yes it could be done unplugged style, but I dont think we should only be able to listen to folk music.
Even folk music benefits from a fair amount of high tech production techniques.

same thing without the benefit of production (not so good)

ok so they are cheating bastards, but i think cheating should be encouraged if it raises standards ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |

I'm talking about picking up a guitar, and grasping the concept of playing strings, learning a few chords and generally strumming your bollocks off. I'm not saying you can pick up a guitair and play like slash instantly.
However, getting in front of a pair of decks, learning how to beatmatch isn't easy, then pitching all the controls, mixing two songs together seemlessly, isn't something you can easily pick up, even with an entire day.
My two comparisons are drawn from a guitar player who has never used a pair of turntables in their life and a DJ who has never picked up a guitar in their life.
Most people, with a few weeks of practice, can learn how to beatmatch and then learn how to mix two tracks but doing it to a level like above is another story.
Like I said originally though, they're both skillful things to be able to do with entirely different skill sets. |

Yeah, he finds two that complement each other and fades one out at its end while fading the other in at its beginning. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

Gonna go with Hetz here and say what a load of horseshit. Give a DJ a guitar and you'll be lucky if he can even hold the strings down properly in a day, let alone play a couple of chords, hell even remember a few chords and switch between them? No chance.

Right...so your arguing that a DJ being able to strum and knock out a few chords is comparable to being able to seamlessly mix one track into another....in which case you could argue back that yes, I want the DJ playing the November Rain solo at the end of day 1
A guitarist would get to grips with a cross-fader pretty quickly, it's not all that hard, it goes left, left record plays, it goes right, right record plays. Any guitarist playing more than 6 months already has the concept of beat & rhythm, so then it's a case of concentrating on whats going on in the headphones and whats coming out the speakers and matching the beat. A day? Hmm dunno, whenever I've had a crack at it I'd say an hour and I had the jist of it, mixing anything from hip-hop, drum n'bass, house, and 2-step garage, but then I'd usually get bored by then, as I honestly can't see the excitement in DJ'ing in itself.
The DMC stuff is not DJ'ing in the proper sense, it's hardly mixing and beatmatching in the standard form, nor is it tolerable for more than 15 mins before it gets samey.
Don't get me wrong, I like the odd bit of scratching and DMC'ing here and there, but how these fuckers get paid £10,000k a set, and why the hell people pay £200 a ticket to get into clubs like Pasha in Ibiza just cuz Judge Jules will be operating a cross-fader that night I'll never know.
