I'm new to cars, and I'd like to change the oil. Problem: how to get to the drain bolt? (mondeo, mk2)

I've looked into having the car serviced but it seems you don't really get much for your money - topping up windscreen washer, etc.

I borrowed some ramps. (will buy some soon)
Happens to be a nice slope outside my house so even when up the ramps the oil flowed out fine.

There are four possible ways:

Arrow Jack it up then use axle stands.

Arrow Use ramps

Arrow Use a hydraulic car lift

Arrow Use a mechanics pit.

Just slide under it ffs. But try not to get the oil all over yourself like what I did (not much room to dodge under a Mondeo). Embarassed Laughing

^^^Which is difficult as i found out. And no leverage to unscrew the old filter.

Another el-cheapo way is get 2 housebricks...find a very high kerb and use the bricks as a stepped ramp. Perch the wheels onto the kerb and gain alittle bit more scabbling space. Smile

For 30-50 quid get some ramps. Thumbs Up

Get a set of axle stands, can get them for around £20-£30 and they will come in handy at other times as well Thumbs Up

A standard Mondeo rides high enough to be able to do it without jacking it up at all.

Get your mate to unscrew the drain plug so you don't get oil going up your sleeve. Don't forget to take off the oil filler cap when he's undoing the bolt....Twisted Evil

Safety first indeed. If there is enough room, do it without jacking it, as is possible on my van. Can't be done on my civic without jacking it.

If you have to jack it, dont support it on bricks/slabs, as these can crumble and fail, doesn't mean that they will, but I would never trust them.

Also never crawl under a car that is only supported by a jack, doesn't matter which type. Support it on stands before you do anything, and use common sense as to where to support it i.e. main bodywork members, somewhere that will take the weight.

I disagree with this, it's important to get practise in to ensure longevity.

Yup, just park one side of the car up on the kerb.

Get a ton of fireworks and tie them all to the tow hook. If you used enough it will lift the car high enough for you, can't say you would have much time to waste while working at it so you better get under it quick!

Mostly on the contrary - it'll drain better. You'll usually find the drain plug is one one side or the other of the sump; raise the side it isn't on in order to get the drain plug to be the lowest point.

Take it to Kwik Fit or Tyre Sales, £25 for an oil and filter, semi synthetic Mobil 1, can't even buy the oil for that price. Cost me the same to get the oil on my 530 changed, all 6.5 litres of it...

I did this with a Golf. Didn't even have to get underneath really as i could just about reach the sump bolt.

I also parked the car on the curbed to change the starter motor. I get very paranoid when under a car so a curb for the most part makes me feel a bit better then a jack, or anything mechanical really. Laughing

As said, you can probably get under without jacking it up enough to do an oil change. If you have a jack but don't want to get under then you can probably access the sump plug safely by removing one of the front wheels. May make filter access easier too, depending on location.

For draining the oil, nothing works better than a washing up bowl. Whenever I use a proper drain can I end up with oil splashing out of it and going everywhere.
