Did a search and nothing conclusive came up.

Today I had a decent 50 mile ride of a std (apart from race can) '99 hornet 600. It was very enjoyable. I liked the power delivery (could do with a bit more poke maybe) the front end didn't feel /that/ bad, but definatly could be a bit more stable feeling.

I've noticed these going for not a lot of money locally recently, and wouldn't mind picking one up as a bit of a commuter for winter or whatever.

Firstly, the 900's. Bikez states them at 110bhp, which seems a little low, and 196kg which seems a bit heavy. Would replacing the cams and carbs with the equivlent from the CBR do much for power gains (Or could the lump be dropped in with relative ease?) I was expecting more of a 110 at the wheel and 180kg, but oh well.

With the 600's is there an easily transplantable front end, such as a CBR-RR? and is there any way to unlock a few more ponies, such as full system + jetting? I know the obvious answer would be just to buy a cbr, but I want comfort. I plan on buying an FS650 in spring, so I want something I can commute on with a bit of poke and able to take a passenger, without fairings.

I understand they don't crash particularly well, are bits expensive?

Cheers
Pyro

RR end doesn't go in exactly easily, but it's do-able.

You can get more power out of them yes, I think low 90's are achievable with a full system, filter, CBR600F carbs, and blocking up the PAIR system. If that doesn't do it then a mild head skim will also get you there.

Have you considered a CBR600F?

Forgot to say I dislike fairings, although if the extent of getting power means swapping carbs and stuff over, seems like quite a lot of hassle. Maybe I'd just settle for std power.

What are they like on track? IIRC you took yours on track?

CBR600RR f4i forks will go on if you mill the forks out 2mm and still use the hornet wheel etc.

before you went that far id get a 17" wheel on the front hige difference i found.
pro's . mid range poke , comfortable

cons small tank and fuel range 100-110 mile to a tank full. more expensive than equivelent bandit / fazer.

Why not just service the front end first of all and then see how it feels? Completely pointless replacing the front end if all that is wrong is it needs new springs & oil. I know replacing my front springs on a hornet with Hagon numbers completely transformed it. For £60 and 25 minutes work.

As standard they are good. Expect to grind the pegs if it's standard and it'll be rather windy.

However. Fit a race shock, change the fork internals, fit rearsets and some sticky tyres they can easily hold their own in the fast group, even with a clown like me on board. Laughing . IMO I can't see the point in going down the more power route, they have enough for the road, and I certainly wasn't hindered on track by only have 85 odd bhp.

Fair enough, racing suspension and that would probably be a good idea, the guy whose bike I rode today said the general opinion was that it didn't help (being an owner I listened to him)
The more power thing isn't really to go faster, I'd get used to the power and getting on earlier, it was more if it was easier to unlock more power cheaply I'd do it.

I'd rather have the above setup and a nice paintjob than 10 more bhp for the same money.

Racing suspension doesn't help? Thinking

Perhaps having full on race kit set up poorly for the road doesn't, but getting it properly set up certainly does.

Standard kit's unadjustable except for preload on the shock.

Plenty of people on the Hornet owners club rate the Ohlins shock(and that's what most of the guys that run them in the Streetfighter class with Thundersport GB use) for them. Unsure on forks, since fork swaps are allowed with Thundersport, however when they weren't most people used to get the standard forks re-sprung and re-valved by people like BSD in Peterboro.

I shoved some ohlins springs and thicker fork oil in the front of mine, This sorted the bottoming out and locking the front I experienced on track.

Rear end I didn't do anything to in the end, could still get my toes down with hornet cup rearsets. (I've still got them if you are interested.)

I didn't worry about more power, I downgeard mine a bike, one down and 3 up. It would then try to lift the front shifting from 2nd to third. Mine was a F2 model, apparently had the most power that year.

I also put renthals on mine, ultralows made it easer to tuck my elbow into the tank. Also braded hoses are a must, 2 line jobs.

I stuck some R&G's on mine, had 2 crashes (one at high speed) and only had to replace my front brake and the R&G itself.

How much is not a lot of money? I'm kinda tempted to get another one myself. Very Happy

Braided lines and a half decent pad compound give you enough brakes to lift the rear.

I could lift the rear on my old Hornet... More technique and tyre grip IMO.

And Jay, I recently got one for £475 Laughing

I remember craigs23 dropped the front forks slightly when he had one and he said it made a big improvement.. though I can't fully remember how much by...

Pity. I was cultivating a fantastic mental image of a tard on top of a mountain.

Anyway; as you were.

I like mine a lot. I've been riding like a hamfisted idiot for the last 2 months after passing and I have still managed to get the pegs down and erased the previous owners chicken strips.

As mentioned, the brakes aren't great, they're a little better on the 2000> ones apparently so the 99 one you rode may have been sub par. A previous owner changed the fork oil in mine, I don't know what the standard ones feel like but to me I reckon the rear end is far worse. That might have something to do with it having a Macadam on the back but the shock is either so hard that it feels like I have a lump of granite in there or so soft that it pogos on bumpy B roads. My upgrades will be tyres, then braided lines and decent pads and then a decent shock.

Oh and if you do get one put some Renthal Ultra Lows on it. They are rather good Wink

A 900? Heard they're boring as hell.

And fuck me that's ugly. I'd set it on fire and then claim on insurance.

Edit:

Does that have a turbo on it or something?! If so, I'd ride it, and change the god awful crap sprayed on it.

If you want a naked bike that is up to sports bike standards, get a triumph speed four.

Braided lines, and 97bhp as standard.
