PostPosted: 09:21 - 23 Aug 2010    Post subject: The SHED Thread !! - UPDATE : Finally finished ! Reply with quote

Well the Mrs decided she wanted a small shed to keep her work stuff in… we found a 14ft x 8ft shed for a reasonable price – so thought that’ll do, and as a bonus it came with free fitting, all that was required was a base – easy!

Where we wanted to put the shed is prone to flooding, after a couple of hours rain there will normally be a puddle a couple of inches deep… so the shed needed to be raised, There’s no way we can afford to build a concrete base, or even build it up and flag stone it – so I initially thought I’ll raise it with breeze blocks.. they’re big, cheap and relatively easy to move about on my own.

I Spoke to the place we’d bought the shed from and explained what I was planning to do, and to find out which way the joists ran under the shed, how far apart they are etc, so I know where to position my blocks… the bloke on the phone was very indecisive, and not overly helpful, but I he told me that the joists are 1ft apart and run lengthways, so armed with (what I thought was) the correct info, off to B&Q I went, plastic friend in hand.

Then came the job of putting all the breeze blocks in place, digging them down and levelling them, this was actually a bit harder than I expected it to be.. Specially when being watched by “The Boss” !!

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/01082010503.jpg

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/07082010509.jpg

We phoned to see when the shed would be delivered – when on the phone to them, only then did they think it wise to tell me the base comes in 3x equal sections sections, making my previous hard work completely void, I was not amused. The chap on the phone explained that the sections are 14ftx8ft divided equally into 3 (i.e 56”x96” each). Fine I thought, will just make a metal frame (well, dad will make a metal frame), that will sit on top of my blocks, that will support every side of all 3 sections.. sorted.

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/12082010557.jpg

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/16082010583.jpg

So – D-Day comes, the blokes arrive to start putting up the shed, I’m happy my base is exactly as it needs to be, as they’ve told me it should be… what could possibly go wrong??

Well, turns out the joists are actually 18" apart and not 1ft as i was origionally told (not that it matters now with the metal frame anyway) and the base isn’t actually 14ft x 8ft, but 13ft8” x 7ft8” – so the base doesn’t actually sit on all the edges of my frame, and is too small:

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010587.jpg
https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010588.jpg

So after a quick phone call to my dad, some magical brackets turned up to sort out all my problems, well, the shed one’s anyway. The plan was to bolt the new brackets onto the inside of the frame to support the edges of the base:

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010591.jpg

There were a few little problems, I’d hammered some sections of 4ft long angle into the ground and bolted them to the metal frame, just to help keep it in one place, so some of these needed attacking with the grinder:

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010592.jpg
https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010593.jpg

Then once all the new brackets were on, we put the visqueen / damp proof sheet stuff down, plonked the floor on top, then started putting the sides up.. these went up rather quickly and with little fuss:

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010594.jpg
https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010597.jpg

The only problem really was the screws I was using were, in places, a touch too long – but never mind, nothing the grinder cant sort out!

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010595.jpg

Incidentally – I’ve had the same screwdriver bit + Extension for years and years, and even though I’ve got handfuls of new Philips / dewalt etc screwdriver bits, I still keep using the old one that’s covered in rust – because it works and seems to fit most screws nicely, and I like it !

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010606.jpg

Then the roof went on, again – this was relatively easy, 2x people push one half up from one side, whilst someone on the inside guides it into place… then repeat on the other side, sorted.

Then to felt the roof, I agreed to let my mate climb onto the roof to secure the felt – as I’m such a kind chap! Then i tidied up the corners a bit, need to go over most of the roof with some proper roof tacs as I only used a staple gun!!

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010600.jpg
https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010604.jpg

Finally the side bits went on to cover the end of the roof, put a couple of locks on the doors, fitted the glass and pretty much decided there and then that I never want to build another shed as long as I live…

The boss gave it a final check over, and decided she wanted a Chinese..

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010605.jpg

So here it is, my shed, want to get some trellis or somthing to cover the breeze blocks and stop anything moving into under the shed!!
https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/21082010609.jpg

Anyone else got some photo’s of their shed?

Your shed is like Mariah Carey, Tom Hanks and Bill Gates in one.

Makes me feel so jealous.

I'm shedless and destined to be shedless for a long time.

The missus wont let me put a shed on the balcony!

My shed
Bought it from someone who wanted to build a house on their garden so needed shed gone.
Gave em £100 for it and it's a proper decent one they had built.
Was a bitch to strip down and remove but worth it, now stands in my garden and added shelving, lights, sockets, alarm and heating
