Right after being royally fucked around by HSBC insurance I will also be moving my account from HSBC to another bank as I am so angry with the way I have been treated by there insurance wing.

What I want to know is what Banks would you recommend. Must have good Customer service and good deals. Anything other than HSBC, I have been looking at santander to seem to have the best deals.

I've been with Nationwide for years and never had a problem.

They also have the best deals should you want to use your card abroad.

I only opened this thread to say what ever you do don't go with HSBC!

I've been with HSBC for years but recently changed to Halifax. They seem to have been alright but as far as customer service goes (being able to call the branch, english call centres etc...) I've found building societies to be much better.

Got a savings account with Nationwide and mortgage with Britannia.

Out of the two the Nationwide have been the best to deal with.

I've been with Nationwide for years, no problems with them and they give me a big overdraft facility. Better online banking than Halifax.

Notice Nationwide being mentioned, not a bank but a building soceity. Co-op are meant to be good, although has obvious high-street limitations.

Avoid anything Halifax/RBS related.

Been with Barclays for 11 years now.
No problems. With my account i receive road side cover all year round and insurance on purchases. There are other bit and bobs but i don’t use them.
I’ve had no problems. Easy online service and I’ve just recently gone paperless.

I'll keep my bank details to myself because I've been with Ulster Bank.

Although the bank has been great for me, now that I live in england its a pain in the arse at times to get money or cheques into the bank.

I don't think you can beat the Co-Op for customer service.

I'm with natwest, seam ok.

I'd avoid lloyds TSB, they managed to loose the signatory records for my inlaws business account, and refused to honor some large cheques to suppliers. Making the business look bad.

The bank deny any fault, the question is if they have no signatorys on file, how have they been cashing cheques for the last 15 years?
They didn't seam to like the idea that they have cashed 100's of k of unauthorised cheques so should pay back all the money. But still wont admit its there fault!

Nationwide screwed me out of a lot of money when I was a student, I swapped some direct debits from that account to a new one and they ignored my request to cancel the DD. Cue several "unauthorised overdraft" charges later with me argueing that their error resulted in me going into my overdraft. Basically they told me that I had to pay or they were sending round the bailiffs.

Barclays are very good, Santander have the most irritating hold music, my mum swears by Co-op.

I think you should look at incentives offered and make your own mind up, everyone can tell you good/horror stories about most banks.

Another vote for Co-op... Excellent UK based call centres, nothing is too much bother for them and you can pay money into your account through the post-office if you can't find a co-op branch.

HSBC suck donkey dicks!

First of all, its not a case of which one is the best but which is the least worse.

No one with an ounce of sense can possibly have a Halifax bank account, they could offer earth shatteringly good deals but people will still think it was their advertising campaign that attracted you thus making you look a complete moron.

The Coop are ok, a bit hard to get big lumps of cash out and having to send cheques via the PO is a bother. Only one branch in Scotland and its in Glasgow so not safe to visit. But there call centre staff are quite good, I had a wee rammy with them which took quite a while to resolve, when they did though they credited my account with £100.

I wouldn't look at RBS or the other big players on point of principal, Santander have just bought a load of RBS branches, it went a bit sour because alot of those customers don't want to bank with Santander. RBS can't send them a letter or otherwise suggest they could move back to them at a later date.

I also read that since Santander isn't UK based, you don't get any of the savings protection offered by UK law. As I recall, in Spain there is heehaw protection.

Thumbs Up

Didn't pay a cheque to a 3rd party insurance company, ignored all correspondence from the 3rd party insurers and my solicitor. Bailiffs where knocking at my door, they then refused to pay the cheque said it was my responsibility. It took my solicitor to threaten them with the Insurance Ombudsman before they eventually paid the money. No apology as of yet apparently they will write to me by 2nd of September, which I doubt.

Completely rubbish in every way possible.

With Halifax, when your wages go in each month you get £5 put in your account.

Left Natwest recently. Worst, Bank, EVER.

Agreed. We've been with Cahoot for many years and had no issues until Santander took over. Customer service has nose-dived, the "good" deals dried up and they have all but driven us to the point where we would have moved but for a house purchase. Now that's just been sorted, we'll be delighted to get the hell outta Dodge.

Halifax are a bunch of cunts. I'm leaving them.

For the sake of 5 quid I'd rather not be with those money stealing cunts.

They've taken huge amounts of money with "overdraft charges" that were unfair, because it was caused by them. Didn't get back all of it. Cunts cunts cunts!

Of course, any bank will have its faults so one of the most important things is to choose one with a branch near you and near your works. Few things irritate me like having to go 10 miles to pay in a cheque.
