Chinky Chinese shiney bike (4 years on)

I cant remember how, why or even where I first see these little beauties but was smitten by one and ordered one straight from the Land of the Rising Sun.

After unpacking it from a crate, registering it with the DVLA and sorting out the last few odds and ends it looked like this:

Then sourcing some after market bits and bobs it started to come together and I even went mad and did a little green laning on it:

I tended to use the bike for the couple of mile ride to work. It was good for 43mph (according to gps) and did what seemed like a million miles ot the tank and has done in excess of 1000km.

One of the last times that the bike was ridden was when the wife managed to crash it into a brick wall and do this to her arm back in July 08 in preperation for he upcoming CBT:

With an iminent move to Oz the bike pootled its final journey to my mums garage to be SORN.

The bikes been stood ever since with the occasional rolling out by me to try and start it. It did kick over but has long since run out of petrol so just gives a nice hefty compression when kicked.

Not looking too bad for a 56 plate Chinese bike eh?

Just need some time and money to get the wifes 'damage' repaired, sort out some loose ends to get it to how I want it, a new battery and an MOT.

Ever had any problems with the Reg plate being mounted horizontally like that?

Not really, the bike is so low you could still read it from sitting in a car. Was only there for a few months and then the wife smashed the front end up.

I was cycling back from work the other day Crying or Very sad (don't shout at me) and there was about 5/6 of these came flying past me. They sound and look fucking mental and I want one.


Not as much as I want a Honda Motocombo though.

I'm guessing the novelty factor achieved from riding one of these is pretty insane?

I wouldn't mind owning one myself, just for the humour.

What makes it even more laughable is the height of the riding position. Your head is the same or lower than those in cars that you're passing by.

Its like an original Mini, you dont have to go fast to be fun. I really don't know if I could get rid of it, it just makes me smile every time I see it.

The engines on Chinese bikes are usually alright and easy to work on. It is everything else that is bolted to them that is junk.

I quite fancy one of these Chinese monkey bikes though.

Yeah me too haha. Are they a nuisance to get insurance for?

I.e one of them bikes that come with a 'ring this number for insurance' tag as most insurers wont bother?

Back in 2006 it cost me £650 and hasn't put a foot wrong really.

I do need to check the loom as I suspect I've put the wrong connections together for the rear brake light after I stripped it down and out back together.

I'm not justifying Chinese bikes but from my experience its been a good one.

Wouldn't mind one of these with a sensible motor in it. Something with 50 or 60 horses would fit the bill.

How big of an engine would fit in one of these?

Must admit keeping the frame but transplanting a big single into it would be impressive.

The most common conversion is a TZR 125 engine, Binge did this to his pit bike.

You can get 20-27 bhp engines off the shelf for them, £800 mind but some serious oomph for such a small bike.

Aye that's some welly for such a physically small machine.

Would I be correct in thinking though, that servicing and reliability become an issue with the TZR engine?

(Think I read Binge say something along those lines, hence pulling the bike apart and selling it? I may have misunderstood though, sorry).

Yep, not sure if thats just becuase it's a 2t engine?

The race spec engines from ooracing may need just as much servicing to be honest.

These are good fun bikes but the only down side to them is the quality of the nuts and bolts, they all should be replaced as they are the worst quailty bolts i have ever delt with.
They dont just round off in one or 2 corners they round off on all corners at once, and the threads strip very easy, the front hub has 3/4 threads that have stripped so bolts have to be used behind them, the rear hub has 1 that stripped but you cant put a bolt behind it as its a drum brake, the exhaust mount on the frame stripped. apart from that its all ok.

Have a new exhaust coming to sit underneath the bike, new wavey disc as the front 1 is warped and its not evern done 1,500miles

I did fit a + 10 swingarm but never got round to getting a longer chain.

I would buy another one if i was offered it cheap.
