Some pics from Swaffs (who posts here occasionaly) from the practice day at Cadwell this weekend. I'm convinced he was doing a bit of a motocross 'spring' or similar to get so much more height than others.

Yeah, he's certainly the most "committed" Laughing

I have a few of him larging it from back in May. Thumbs Up

Not just commitment, but clever with it.
He knew he was the fastest over the mountain, even if it meant leaving the tarmac for abit. Cool

I got the impression the serious height was show boating more than anything - good for sponsors, though Smile.
When he went for the overtake near the end of the race, you'll note he wasn't quite as high and got the rear down quickly for good drive.

I also noted that one time he seemed to have the rear lift up at the bottom of the mountain - I wonder if his 'trick' was to really pump up the turn in speed?

He got great traction off that last right corner before the mountain. So any loss of speed whilst airbourne was mitigated by the fact he pinned-it throughout that section.
And he looked comfortable t'boot.

Shame to rest of the circuit is too small for BSB bikes.

Showboating you say? No-one beats Johnny Rae!

Karl Harris was also pretty handy. Here's one of mine from 2007...

Is there a knack to getting big air over the mountain? I've only ever seen maybe three people get it on trackdays there. Do you just have to go round the right hander really bloody fast, or is there more to it?

It's a lot harder since they changed it.
As I say, I strongly suspect that he was using motocross style jump technique to get bigger air - as he didn't seem to be going that much faster, but was getting much bigger air.
Obviously speed isn't going to hurt either Smile.

Yep, they resurfaced the mountain a couple of seasons ago and seemed to take the edge off it.

Having watched a lot of BSB races there trackside you can hear the different techniques, which have subsequently been confirmed in interviews I've heard. For example, someone like Kiyo shuts the throttle for a moment as he approaches the top, which stops the bike going too high. Others (Rea, Harris, Byrne etc) just revved straight through it and launched themselves. I remember someone (Byrne I think) saying he'd tried both ways and (for him) it made little difference to the time.

The times I've seen riders properly showboating (normally on the cool-down lap after a practice session, like Harris above) it's sounded like they've been in a gear lower and just nailed it straight out of the right hander. I'm sure they're lifting the bike motorcross stylee too. I did see Byrne nearly crash there when he was doing his 'jump while looking left into the crowd' favourite though Laughing

I suspect its also something to do with the 'double level' of tarmac over the mountain - if you're caining it but not excessively you feel the front go light once, the rear squats and then the front goes light again.

Brilliant though Mr. Green

This.

When I was there in May, he seemed to be seat bouncing, or preloading the suspension on the upslope to give him more pop/height over the summit.
