Riding with a pillion

I took a pillion for the first time yesterday and man in was uncomfortable, are there any tips for riding with an extra 13 stone on the back? I felt like I couldnt move at all

Its always wobbly the first time because you arent used to the extra weight on the bike. If it was their first time too then they arent used to riding pillion. Add the 2 together and its a nightmare.

I started taking my eldest out and about to save bus fare and at first it was a nightmare. She would fight the natural lean of the bike and wriggle around trying to get comfy which, when stopped at the lights isnt too bad, but doing 80 on the motorway its a nightmare. I had to tell her to sit still!

Now days tho, shes great, she's learnt that leaning with the bike isnt as scary as it seems and its a pleasure to take her anywhere.

What you have to do is remind them that they are, for want of a better word, luggage and they should act accordingly. Tell them to sit still. Dont look around, as much fun as the views are the constant moving of the head alters their body position and as a result the handling of the bike, Tell them that the best way to ride with you is to keep their eyes fixed on the back of your lid. That way if you lean over they will follow suit.

If they wriggle constantly tell them that you would rather have them uncomfy with their trousers up their arse than have them wriggle around and both fall off and get dead! Normally the getting dead speech sets it in their mind.

Dont wriggle around or we will fall off and get dead.
Dont attempt to take control of the bike or we will fall off and get dead.

Agreed with above, first time i took my other half on, was stiff as a post, leant against me, and wriggled around all the time..

But now shes great, and i have to say, the bike feels better with someone else on it too, extra weight plants it more

The only pillion I've taken was a very petite lady who was also a horse rider. Strong thighs, massive boobs, about 8 stone wringing wet.

My son was 11 when I took him on the back for the first time. I gave him my usual speach, 'relax, lean when I lean!'
After a couple of miles I stopped, turned to him and said, 'would you make up your mind which of my shoulders you want to look over?'

Always better when pillion weighs less than you, but even with a heavy weight it can be good. You just need to enforce the THIS IS MY SEAT rule....

Keep it smooth, so there is no head banging and sliding around on the seat.

the first time I rode pillion was on my great uncles honda blackbird. he may be getting on..but he sure knows how to open the throttle! i lost count of the number of time i headbutted his back during gear changes from trying not to fall off the back!

As mentioned in similar threads, i drag a little rear brake when doing slow speed manuevers. Find it keeps the bike very stable, in town esp.

Using the rear when coming to a halt lessens the forkdive effect.
Need to scrub speed smoothly and quickly i.e wet corner/roundabout then use some rear brake. (mine is drum, so very progressive)...experiment to find the 'biting point' for want of a better term.

The pillion may get into biking themselves...so don't put them off by frightening them. I have friends who still recount their 1st pillion journey, and say "never again".

Add a bit of preload to the rear shock if it's easy to do.

I tell my missus to keep an eye on the road too, so she knows whats going on. It amazing how much of a difference it makes when your pillion knows your going to brake/accelerate.
