Came so very close to buying an early T595 before I got my current 9. Lovely noise but a bit of a minefield of potential issues, afaik the later ones sorted most of the horror stories but imo lack the charm of the original.

Every bike has some issues, I don't think triumphs have more than most others.

595 was prettier, but 955 has more grunt. Both are relatively old fashioned in handling etc (not in a bad way) but both great on British roads.

I've got a 955 speed triple and its a keeper, great community on triumph torque, and its a proper British bike Smile

Whereabouts are you?

As for the handling- I've never had a problem with mine, but front suspension is a little soft as std so I've had mine rebuilt with a decent valve kit and stiffer front springs and I'm liking it even more Smile

agreed that the earlier 595 are a much better looking bike! rode both bikes many times and think they are fantastic especially for british roads. once you've rode one i think you'd be sold on it and for £3k you can get a good one.

Get a test ride - to me they just seem to be a bit of a pale imitation of the fireblade/zx9, with no real benefits from them, but some disadvantages.

If you are comparing them to fireblades and zx9s then you're missing the point.

The Triumphs are triples, with far more character than the blade/9 (in my opinion) and a very different, much lower revving engine character.

In terms of power/speed it's all a bit irrelevant on the road - a quicker rider will be faster regardless of which of the three bikes they're on. A good rider won't go faster on any of them - they'll drive according to the road.

The Speed Triples had the same issue with the pre 02 models being better looking (mine is an 02 model, so less pretty but a bit more power) but on the Speeds it was only the rear bodywork, on the daytona there's a big difference, and the curvy shape is definitely prettier.

£2k will buy you a really good T595 Daytona, with a little over 100bhp at the back wheel, and a wonderful exhaust note.

Whereabout in the UK do you live?

To my mind the triumph offers similar low down 'feel', but without the top end of the Japanese bikes - 'worst of both worlds'. Can emulate the effect by stopping turning the throttle when the revs rise to high.
Then it's got a heavier feel and actually a riding position that most find less comfortable.
While the blade/zx9 aren't massively 'characterful', the triumph is even less so to my mind - flat and uninspiring. I think the version used in the speed triple certainly suits the naked bike more, but this lump just doesn't gel with a sports bike.

So no point buying more than a CB500, then Wink.
The more flexible four cylinder engines will allow a rider to be lazier if they want, also it will mean each gear can be held for a bit longer.

So, I would suggest that if you think I'm missing the point, you're missing the point Razz.

Yes, no point.
People buy liter bikes because they don't cost an arm and a leg to buy/run.
Had a gallardo cost £20.000 pounds with 35mpg fuel economy everybody would buy it.

Gallardo is a bit different to my mind as it's much more about the status/tart value. Can get very fast cars with £20k.

I've got a litre bike for the ease of going fast.
I wouldn't choose one for fun - around 37hp is right for me for that on the road, but when we're talking utilitarian purposes, my GSXR1000 will get me from A to B with minimal fuss.
Others enjoy the going fast it's self, rather than achieving it and for them a litre bike will no doubt offer more fun.

Don't listen to G. If you believe what he says, his brain works only in scientific terms and will only ride or buy a bike if its within a hairs whisker of winning at Top Trumps.

The 955i is a good bike. The original T595 was renamed after a year or so to become the 955i. The original shape 955i is the best one to go for because it had all of the early problems ironed out.

My 1998 955i which I owned from 2001 to 2003 is still going in the hands of a mate of mine, who has now done 40,000 miles and it still looks like it has just come out of the factory. Just give it a clean and it looks great.

They aren't quick turners but they are stable once they are in a corner, and the grunt available is good to have on the road. The power delivery is smooth and about right for what you want on a road bike. Yes, they are heavy but you don't notice the weight on the move. They aren't super comfortable but they are OK for a sportsbike of that era.

They are also super reliable, tough, well built and (IMO) good looking.

When you buy, check the eccentric chain adjuster on the rear wheel hasn't been mullered by someone using a screwdriver to adjust the chain. I can't think of any other particular 'common issues' with the bike.

They *are* good bikes, it is just they aren't as light or as fast as the Jap bikes of the same era. Doesn't mean they are bad bikes though.

Have a look at my profile and you'll see your description of my choice of bikes is far from true Smile.
Also, see how I regularly use 'sharp feel', 'sparkle' and a variety of other less than scientific ways to describe the 'soul' of a bike.
So, don't listen to Mark, he doesn't believe it's worth having anything over a 600 on the road, so his opinion is irrelevant Wink.

Maybe not, but certainly not as good as the Jap bikes Wink, which are often available for less money too.

The 600's look exactly the same, the 50cc less make them look ugly?

All I can can say is the 955 engine is brilliant, smooth, powerful torquey and sounds the nuts.

I traded in an immaculate 2006 636 Ninja for my 02 speed triple. The ninja made more power, was about 30 mph faster at the top end, had great brakes and plush suspension, weighed less and cornered on rails.

But it was completely wasted on the road, for me to get the feeling I was "riding fast" I had to be going at very silly speeds, the kind of speeds where you are hoping its clear round the next corner rather than setting your speed according to what you can see.

The Triumph has effortless mid range grunt, "feels" like I'm riding quick at much lower speeds than the Ninja, and its British. The British thing means something to me, it might mean nothing to you.

I bet each of your bikes would win at top trumps in one area or another...

"Not as good" is an undefined term. I'd be surprised if you could find a jap bike of the same age which is built as well as the 955i for example.

Top trumps as in I chose the best bike to suit my needs at the time?
Though a lot of those the 'trump' would have been "cheap bike close to me".

How many people find a bike that best meets their needs, then chooses a different one that is a less good match?
So yes, I do try and choose bikes a bike that 'top trumps' for my needs Smile. So far, I have yet to find the need for a heavier bike, given the choice.

mr.kris; The TL actually got pretty good reviews when it first came out. However, certainly not up to the R1 levels for a good reason; so it sounds like you want an inferior machine to show up other riders with your superior skill. In that case <shrugs>, probably appropriate Smile
Even as a twin hater, I think I'd still choose a TL over the trumpet.
As I say, I think the engine character is fairly well suited to the naked version, but just doesn't make sense for a sports bike.

Now now guys we all know that a bikes soul isnt something that can be substantiated in words, let alone on an internet forum. Some people will get it with a certain make of bike, some with a model and some with just that particular bike on that particular day.
I love my 955i and wouldnt change it for the world, its done 40k miles and as stated above apart from scratches ive put on it is going strong. Main weakness they have is the electrics (should be left on a trickle feed at home) and the fact that they simply dont start if the battery is weak.
Mines just gone in to have around 3 grand of parts fitted and then off to be setup (dyno, suspension)
