PostPosted: 11:35 - 06 Sep 2010    Post subject: Test Rode the BMW RR Reply with quote

Well at the weekend I took the BMW1000RR out for a spin, I tried to test it every way I possibly could, barring one, but I'll explain that later. there is a little video at the bottom of a small run with straight lines and a little round-a-bout surfing to test the traction control. Video quality was not great for some reason, was pretty good before I uploaded it to Youtube.

Overall it was an awesome one litre bike, the gadgets on there really make it safer for the rider, but in my opinion takes some skill out of the riding. For example, the traction control and build in giro thingy is awesome for cornering as you can literally whack the throttle right back and the bike will give you as much power through the rear wheel without spinning it up. so you should have a faster exiting speed out of the corner. But in my opinion powering down on a straight the traction control ruins the acceleration and makes it rather jumpy. This is the only option I do not like as overall it ruins the smoothness of the bike. But I later found out you can switch it off if required....I didn't realise that, hey ho!

Brakes on this machine are Brembos and are the best brakes I have ever tried, simply unreal.

I like the 3 different modes to dull the power down for different riding, but this is no new feature to the biking world, as you all know Suzuki have had this for a while.

It's looks were pretty off putting at first, BMW being BMW like to make ugly machines, but by the end of the test ride the looks grew on me.

What are everyone's views on the bike?

Here are a couple of pics and the video;

Are you saying when you start to put the power on coming out of a corner you can just smash open the throotle and the bike does the rest?

A mate has one in the baby shite colour Wink

Nice bike, apart from the different headlights (BMW trait). Launch control is useless as I left him at the lights and I was on my Bandit 600 Laughing

In a way, just say you have the bike cranked over and you start to wind the throttle on, you can actually open the throttle to full and the bike will not give you 100% power as the bike will either low/high side. You cannot high side this bike apparently. I was rather shocked to hear that.

It does indeed, you can still wheelie it, but it will only go to 45 degrees and hold it for 5 seconds, so you cannot flip the thing, kinda cool huh!

It's a nice bike, I wasn't to impressed with the mid range on it, and felt that pretty much all the power was at the top end of the rev range. Like you say, the traction is good, but it does take a little away from the riding, but it does work very well, you can give it full throttle in the wet and it won't spin the back wheel. The brakes are amazing, they are miles better then the brakes on my Fireblade, this was the most impressive part of the bike for me. The handling was good, didn't feel quite as nimble as my Fireblade, but still felt very sure footed, and quite nice.

Overall I would say it would make a better track bike then it does a road bike, due to all the power being at the top of the rev range.

I have rode a couple of them now, and I think if it had the mid range and the nimbleness of the Honda, I would have one.

It seems to take alot of the fear out of ridding really fast I dunno, I'm not sure I like it. ABS I can deal with as that is fully a safety thing, someone pulls out you have to slam on the breaks stops the wheel locking, great. But being able to let the bike tell you how much power you can put down without the wheel spinning. Seems too much control to me.

Do I sound like an old man?

hmmm 5second wheelies sound annoying. I LOVE wheelies and being able to only get to 10 oclock for 5seconds would really irritate me.

That said im sure the insane-warp-your-mind BHP would more than make up for it!

You can wheelie them for as long as you like if you put it in Slick mode with traction off Wink

I've been tempted between one of these, the blade or a Ducati 1098 or 1198 for some time now..

Unfortunatly due to work, i might not be in the country forever so dont want to loose a load of money on another new bike Sad

Not at all, taking the fear out as you put it is great, I completely agree with you that the bike is doing most the riding. I powered down out of one corner and I could feel the bike not letting me go faster that I normally would, but I knew I could go faster out of that corner if I were on my R1 with no toys!

But saying that, I bet they are ridiculous on track. Being able to power down without worrying that you'll stack it. well, in theory you can't lose. That will then make it one expensive track bike!

You could just put the bike in Slick mode, which pretty much lets you do what you want Wink

For what is a pretty well thought about bike that does everything that it says on the tin......... Am I the only person that thinks the front end is fugly?

The unsymetric lights make it look like its got a gammy eye!

Nope, but BMW have been making things that ugly (or worse) for years.

All the best

This is very true mr Start sir. But you would have thought that by now if they are going to make what could be called the perfect riders bike then they would at least make it look the part.

Take ducati for instance. Not renowned for their easy to ride styles but by fuck they have made some beautiful bikes.

Hi

True, but then saying you bought a BMW is much the same as saying you bought an ugly bike Wink . No more description of the looks is required. Suppose you could argue that to the rider the front end isn't visible even passing a shop window.

More seriously, I think there is meant to be some claim that odd offsets of headlights make bikes more visible and helps with perceptions of distance for those who see the bike.

All the best

Keith

I think my bike is ugly, but I bought it for how good it is, not for how it looks.

I'd imagine it's the same for a lot of BMW owners, looks is the last thing they will look at when buying a performance 1 litre bike!

Fair enough point but to me its like a woman. Who cares how good in bed she is if her face is like a car wreck.

There has to be some asthetically pleasing properties before I would want to own one. I'd rather own a stunning bike that handles like a turd on ice than by a bike I thought was ugly.

I guess at the end it comes down to a matter of taste and everyones is different. There will be a few that like the look of the bike just as there are a few that agree that its fugly.

As I said above, I to thought the bike was damn ugly, but by the end of the day it was growing on me.

I remember someone said to me on here once when I was talking about the new R1 looking awful, that you can't see how ugly the bike is when you are sat on it. Kind of makes sense.
