Had a search and seem that Whale are the best rivet tool but seems that (according to people on the 'net) that when you put the plate of the rivet link you had to one hole at a time so could go wrong and it involves a lot of banging with a hammer Confused

Since I have yet to fit a rivet link I saw THIS VIDEO and this motion-pro tool looks very easy to use.

Im fitting a new DID Chain and Sproket to my CB400sf and have been told its a soft link.

Has anyone had any expereince with motion-pro rivet tool or whale?

Would love to hear some opinions/advice as chain and sprokets isnt something I know all that much about Thumbs Up

The Whale chain tool is easy to use (don't quite understand what problems people are having that you describe) and can't see how something that involves hitting things with a mallet could be bad?
However, they are designed for solid rivets.

I only watched the start of the video (youtube being slow), but I suspect the motion pro one is designed for hollow rivets, which is probably what you have when you say 'soft link'.

I'm happy with my Whale for solid rivets and breaking chains, and the other one I've got for hollow rivets and pressing plates on.

Thanks for the reply G, from searching you seemed to be a bit of a pro with chains!

Yea I rang Wemoto and they said that it is a hollow/soft link and all DID chains have these.

As it is not a solid link, should the motion-pro be a good choice?

I used one of these on a DID 525VX chain with soft link rivet:

https://bikespeeduk.com/epages/steer2916.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/steer2916/Products/CHAINTOOL

Cost me £22, it is identical to another one I found an instructions PDF for that was stamped with motion pro, everyone seems to use the same tools stamped with their own logos. It is a good piece of kit, it seems well made considering it is so cheap. IIRC Kickstart has the same chain tool also.

Unless you are doing it on a regular basis then buy a cheaper one Thumbs Up .

Shocked That does look indentical!! Thanks for the heads up and I think I will give that one a go.

How many times have you used it? TBH at £22 it has paid after 1 use for itself as I have previous paid a garage to do it.

I have only used it the once (I did mess about on a few links of a bicycle chain as well) but there has been no visibile wear or bending etc on any of the components, I greased all of the moving parts up beforehand to reduce the strain on the threads.

Breaking the chain is the most demanding task on a tool, you can cut the old chain off with a hacksaw/dremel etc or use a dremel/grinder/file to remove the flat part on one of the rivets so you can press it through easily. Splaying the rivet link doesn't take that much force really.

One thing I did need to do though was widen the holes on the press plate so the rivet link would fit through properly to press the plates on. I'll find a link to a post I wrote about it in a minute.

There is the thread; in summary if the need presented then I'd buy another one Thumbs Up .

Yep, and for soft links it does the job OK. Never tried to use it to split a chain (use a Whale chain splitter for that, normally after angle grinding the heads off).

All the best
