As an off shoot of this thread which had some people debating material goods vs experiences and spending money on experiences
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=203525&highlight=
What do people think is more important? To accumilate stuff, whatever this might be? Or to experience things and do things with the money instead?.
Personally I've moved all the way to experiences above stuff because I only have one life and I don't believe material goods are key to happiness no matter what advertisers may attempt to tell us.
What do you think? ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |

I also opted for Experiences despite the fact my bedroom is loaded with music recording gear etc. That's irrelevant in light of how I want to live my life.
I believe material goods/possessions do indeed help people live a life full of experiences (stop me if I'm waffling on) but I also think too many material possessions and you're gonna come to a standstill.
Mark, I think it's a good thing. (Providing you still had your licence) you could just whack stuff on your bike and sod off wherever you want for however long you want.
People with a material lifestyle will struggle with things that 'experience type' people won't.
I know, I'm chatting shit
Infact, I don't know why I typed the above
Cheers anyhow, ;D

I have "stuff" such as a ZX6R & a good stereo & my pc but I care nothing for them if I was to compere them to the good experiences I have had in my life.
If someone stole my "stuff" I would have the right hump, but if someone stopped me from doing things and living life I would be totally gutted.
I dont have long on this planet and I cant take my "stuff" with me, but I can take my memories with me

Ask anyone who has seen my bike kit, or my phone, or my tv to answer that one.
The only shopping I ever seem to do, is food shopping and petrol.
But I am happy in my choice. I don't have the latest gadgets, I don't have a mortgage, I don't have fashionable items (although oddly enough I do find that sometimes I am 'in' fashion due to what comes back round.. )
I save for adventures and sightseeing and socialising. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

Experience every time, though you might need some stuff in order to have those experiences - can't ride hard on a good road without a bike, for example. When I left my house yesterday, I was thinking to myself that, much as I like the place, and the freedom it brings (remote area, no close neighbours), if it burnt down, there'd be little I'd miss.
My dad died a year ago today, and when we cleared the house it was so full of the things he had considered important in life, right back to old 78s in a trunk in the loft. Pretty much all of it ended up getting dumped, and most of it hadn't seen the light of day for decades. |

I've had a major clear out of old stuff around the house recently. Couldn't believe the amount that I'd hoarded over the years, and most of it hasn't seen daylight for some years
so for me, experiences / memories come first ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

Wow, 90% say experience, and yet cock loads of you have I-phones and are sat shivering in Britain 365 a year.
One of those questions that has only one answer people say, but everyone else knows if they're a stuff or experience person. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

Bit of both.
As others have said, sometimes the stuff facilitates the experience. Are my car and bikes 'stuff'? Or are they 'experience machines'?
I just bought a house (stuff) which I'm completely renovating (more stuff). But it isn't just about accumulating stuff, it's also about the experience of taking a shell and turning it into exactly what I want, and then the experience of living in it. And hopefully there'll be a great deal of statisfaction, since I'm doing as much as possible by myself (experience) rather than paying others to.
Some stuff is just stuff. But if they give me pleasure, isn't that an experience. I bought a red microwave yesterday, it makes me happy. A white one wouldn't make me think anything.
As to the original 'spend £13,000 on a wedding' thing that inspired this thread... it seems like a stunning waste of money to me. £13,000 buys one hell of a holiday (experience!) or makes a good start on a house deposit (experience & stuff?)... I could think of a thousand things I'd rather spend it on than an over-priced one day show off. |

I went for experience but stuff is just as valid I think.
I don't have any shiny stuff, no expensive phone or stereo, my bike is shit. I can afford that kind of thing but I don't buy it. I wonder if when I couldn't afford it that was the main reason I felt I needed to have that kind of thing?
A friend of mine was talking about a film he'd watched called The Bucket List. I didn't see it myself but he said it was evocative and made you think about what you've missed out on in life.
It made me think that memories and experience comes from stuff you either buy or come by somehow. You buy a holiday and dine off the memories (as it were) for a few years or you buy an iPhone (for reasons which escape me entirely) and for a few years you have an iPhone and all the joys having such an object in your life brings.
Its sort of the same thing.
I had an extremely depressing thought after my friends mawkish remarks about the bucket list in so far as, it doesn't really matter what you do in life, at the end of it your dead and you can't take any of it with you; it does beg the question; whats the point in anything?
A bit like saying 'I'd hate to fall ill and die as it would be really upsetting for my parents'. It would but you'd be dead so not in any shape to feel bad about it.
Anyway, my muddled point was, it doesn't matter what you chose, the pleasure is only fleeting, at the end of the day you'll die and there isn't a holiday or an app for that.
