My Dad's company is currently putting up those gantries/signs there etc and he said he's noticed a lot of speed camera paraphernalia without any actual speed cameras... yet.
I can't see any reason for wanting to keep it 50mph after the roadworks are gone, I'll see if he can dig for info. . If you've gone through there and the road was closed at night, sorry, was most likely him! !
Father was speaking to the people who are running this thing and he said at current the average speed cameras there are catching ~1000 people a week give or take a few.
I know the motorway Tarmacsurfer is on about, it's a nightmare. Speed limit will go from 40 to 60, to 70, to 50 and it's a right pain in the arse. ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

Yeah, I've seen this, but I've also seen it in a few other places and the lines have been there for years.
I can only assume that they're trying to trick you into thinking there's a camera there you've not seen and encourage you to slow down because you associate the lines with a speed camera.
Kind of like Pavlov's dogs I guess. ____________________ My Flickr |

You also need to be wary of the rear facing average speed cameras ____________________ Suzuki GSF600 K3 (in the fastest colour, black). |

I spoke to my Dad concerning this and he has told me the intended plan is to make it like the motorway around Birmingham and the M25 with the variable speed limit cameras.
When he spoke to the commissioner in charge of it all he stated the reasoning behind it was "To prevent accidents before the tunnels" as apparently doing 70mph causes a bottleneck which leads to accidents. . ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

To be honest, if there is congestion every rush hour at the same spot, and perhaps a free lane, you'll get people using the free lane to tear to the front, throw the anchor out and push-in at times when the congestion is just building. I think this is a time when the cameras are actually justified. Different to having them arbitrarily scattered along vast stretches of road. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

The cameras on the M42 work as well, all you have to do is google to see how many people they have caught out.
I was interested in these cameras because there was plenty of times I had "accidently" gone over the national speed limit in these areas and seen no flashes, but obviously was slightly concerned. The general consensus is: -
- Not all the cameras are active, there are many dummy cameras on these stretches.
- Apparently they are not film based gatso's, so can take unlimited amounts of digital pictures.
- When the speed limit is changed all drivers have a 60 second grace period before the cameras are active again.
- The speed cameras are not switched on during NSL periods.
I travel on that stretch of the M4 at least once a week and I haven't seen any cameras installed yet, in truth the gantries are a lot different to those on the M25/M42/M6. I am just sick to the back teeth of the un-necessary blanket 50MPH SPECS patrolled stretch when they have finished work on 75% of the project. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it.
