Anyone else noticed speed camera lines on the road after motorway Gantries?? The M4 between the severn crossing and Newport in Wales has speed camera lines after every Gantry. No fluorescent boxes, no other obvious camera shaped objects yet but I assume there will be?

Anyone else getting plagued by these things?

The area is currently a 50mph average speed zone due to road works, I assume they want to keep it 50 after the roadworks are gone. Fecking retards.

Quite a bit of the motorway surrounding Birmingham is now under a variable speedlimit, there are signs on the gantries showing the max speed. There are also speed cameras in some of the gantries that go active when there is a sub 70mph limit in force.

Ah that would make sense, that stretch gets a bit hectic at rush hour.

My Dad's company is currently putting up those gantries/signs there etc and he said he's noticed a lot of speed camera paraphernalia without any actual speed cameras... yet.

I can't see any reason for wanting to keep it 50mph after the roadworks are gone, I'll see if he can dig for info. Smile. If you've gone through there and the road was closed at night, sorry, was most likely him! Laughing!

Father was speaking to the people who are running this thing and he said at current the average speed cameras there are catching ~1000 people a week give or take a few.

I know the motorway Tarmacsurfer is on about, it's a nightmare. Speed limit will go from 40 to 60, to 70, to 50 and it's a right pain in the arse.

A bit of digging would be great, I can't see any real reason to keep the M4 (and a48 for that matter) at 50 but you know how these council types are. I drive the late night diversion through newport several times a week Very Happy say thanks for that, newport smells of burning plastic.

1000 people a week!!! That's shocking, I do laugh when some BMW driving arse hole is following me through at 70 (on the bike) but 1000 a week is pretty steep, can see why nobody is rushing to take down the cameras in the parts that are finished.

Yeah, I've seen this, but I've also seen it in a few other places and the lines have been there for years.

I can only assume that they're trying to trick you into thinking there's a camera there you've not seen and encourage you to slow down because you associate the lines with a speed camera.

Kind of like Pavlov's dogs I guess. Wink

You also need to be wary of the rear facing average speed cameras Thumbs Up

1000 people a week!!!

I've always wondered how many people the roadwork cameras catch. There's still a stretch up on the M62 and i've seen lots of people doing 70+ through there.

Didnt i hear a while ago they were keeping 50mph limits on motorways to stop bottlenecking and traffic jams, think they said traffic flows better at a steady 50mph than at a 70mph on and off?

Would kind of make sense if it were a variable speed limit, but 50mph in the dead of the night on an empty road is completely retarded.

I commute through that stretch daily, afaik the plan is to do the same as they've done to the M42 near the NEC once the roadworks have finished, - variable speed limits with speed cameras on the gantries for when the limit is changed from the normal motorway limit.

So you doing 70 through the average speed zone is ok but anyone in a car doing the same is an arse? Most average zones have rear facing cameras now to get you, keep it up.

Someone thick enough to do it in a car is an arse hole.
Most? I've seen one on one occasion in Devon, never on this stretch of road.

Got the gantrys up and lines on the road along with camera signs up here on the M1 where they widened it to four lanes but no cameras as yet, hopefully with the government cutbacks they wont appear now.

Nope. The ones on the M25 near Heathrow do work - seen them go off many times. Not every gantry has them fitted but you can't tell (unless you're going in the other direction).

Not strictly talking about gantries, more in general. There are a couple just after bridges and a few on a dual carriage way near me where I know there aren't and never have been cameras, but the lines are there and have been for ages. Confused

I spoke to my Dad concerning this and he has told me the intended plan is to make it like the motorway around Birmingham and the M25 with the variable speed limit cameras.

When he spoke to the commissioner in charge of it all he stated the reasoning behind it was "To prevent accidents before the tunnels" as apparently doing 70mph causes a bottleneck which leads to accidents. Rolling Eyes.

To be honest, if there is congestion every rush hour at the same spot, and perhaps a free lane, you'll get people using the free lane to tear to the front, throw the anchor out and push-in at times when the congestion is just building. I think this is a time when the cameras are actually justified. Different to having them arbitrarily scattered along vast stretches of road.

The cameras on the M42 work as well, all you have to do is google to see how many people they have caught out.

I was interested in these cameras because there was plenty of times I had "accidently" gone over the national speed limit in these areas and seen no flashes, but obviously was slightly concerned. The general consensus is: -

- Not all the cameras are active, there are many dummy cameras on these stretches.

- Apparently they are not film based gatso's, so can take unlimited amounts of digital pictures.

- When the speed limit is changed all drivers have a 60 second grace period before the cameras are active again.

- The speed cameras are not switched on during NSL periods.

I travel on that stretch of the M4 at least once a week and I haven't seen any cameras installed yet, in truth the gantries are a lot different to those on the M25/M42/M6. I am just sick to the back teeth of the un-necessary blanket 50MPH SPECS patrolled stretch when they have finished work on 75% of the project.
