PostPosted: 18:59 - 17 Sep 2010    Post subject: small cheap van for trackbike Reply with quote

had a little search around here n can't seem to find any similar threads.
right- have recently bought a trackbike which is not road legal and am after a means of transport for it.
ideally it needs to be cheap and fuel efficient as i'd be getting rid of my car.
so what's the smallest (probably) car derived van you could fit a bike in. namely a cbr600f. rather than going for a battered transit or similar.
been looking at stuff like ford escort van or carrier, vauxhall combo etc...
anyone got any ideas what can be used?
thanks for helping

A Ford Connect would probably be about the right sort of size... a sort of high top version of a car based van.
Not been around for too long though, so it may be worthwhile looking for a similar alternative - a Kangoo maybe??

do like the look of the transit connect, would be perfect. then i had a look on ebay and the prices are unfortunate.
really hoping someone has an escort van they use for track bikes or know the dimensions (cant find them) as they seem to go for peanuts!
a kangoo based van would work well and the pricing isn't too bad so am considering that.

Would it not be more cost efficient to rig your car up with a nice snazzy trailer?

Just a thought.
But by the sounds of your post I'm assuming it's probably already crossed your mind. In which case, disregard this Laughing

Cheers,
Steve.

Very much doubt you'll fit one in an escort van. My mum had a Maestro van (similar) and we had to fold the bars of my cg down to get it in!

Quite a few people use people carriers where you can move the seats out of the way.
It wouldn't have the fuel economy you were looking for, but I'd quite like a Mitsubishi Delicia after someone on here mentioned them - can fit a bike in one side and sleep on seats flattened the other side. And it's a 4x4 which you can get a trail bike on the tow ball of, which would suit me.

I've got a Ford Fiesta Courier van that I transport my MX bike in.

It ONLY just fits, literally, I have to put it in diagonally and then wedge the front wheel down the side of the passenger seat, the passenger can still sit in the seat, so its not to bad, then the back wheel right up to the door. It fit's, but only just! I'm not sure how a road bike compares to my Motocross bike, I've never tried to put the CBR in the van? I would imagine the Motocross bike is a lot taller, so height isn't an issue, but I'm not sure if it would be any longer? My MX bike is a KTM 200sx, and they have quite a long swing arm, my friends YZF250 fits better!

did think it was a tall order getting one in an escort van.
in regards to a trailer, had i thought about it before getting too cheerful about buying a car, i would have made sure the car i was going to buy was able to take a towbar.
unfortunately i didnt and ended up buying a ford ka. bad foresight on my part. so that's out of the question.

This is the same as my van, cost me £200 Very Happy

I don't see why a CBR600F wouldn't fit? The KTM fits, and I'm sure, lentgh wise, its as long as a CBR6?

The Vauxhall Combo, and Peugot Parter derived van's wouldn't fit the KTM in, this was the only Combo style van I could find that was the right size!

some hopeful stuff, then i come across this little gem;

Tow bar is easy to add to most (non sports) modern cars, so you're just saving the price of a towbar (probably £80 or so.)

Generally I'd say full-size dirt bikes are a similar wheelbase to road bikes.

I thought that G, but then found this
https://www.buchanstowbars.co.uk/towbars/faqs.htm wrote:
"I have a Ford Ka and want to tow my small trailer but nobody lists a towbar. Can I have one specially manufactured?"

No. When EC Type Approving the vehicle, the manufacturer did not declare that it was suitable for towing. It therefore has no specified towing capacity and no specified mounting points. Towing with, or even the fitment of a towbar to any such vehicle registered on or after the 1st August 1998 would make you liable to prosecution.

But then found this, so I'm not sure Confused

A Transit connect is too small I have my works transit connect with the long wheel base and the high top roof and measured it.
Its tall enough but too short by about a 12'' for either a gsxr600 k6 or a 2006 fireblade (with the wheels on).

That says it's only for models up to 98, so is actually consistent with your previous quote.

However, I stand by my quote of most modern cars Smile - though I suppose maybe the particularly small ones are less likely to have the capability.
