PostPosted: 17:23 - 21 Sep 2010    Post subject: CG 150 project build.... Reply with quote

I thought some might be interested in my tinkerings as I'm a natural fiddler with anything to do with engines Thumbs Up For a while I was building car/van engines for a living and used to be a mechanic, when my dad was into bikes (1960's) he constantly had his Honda 305 in bits making improvements so I suppose it's in the blood...

Anyhow, on with the project Mr. Green

I bought a CG150 liner/piston set from Ebay before I read into it properly so the search was on for a spare CG engine to strip and have machined to accept the bigger barrel.

Slightly incomplete but a stator cover and kick start/gear levers should be easy enough to find, the guy took a straight £20 for it and his son fell in love with my old car Cool

So, time to attack it with my air powered ''universal torque wrench'' (MAC tools twin hammer impact gun Twisted Evil )

Some bugger has been here before...

Stainless replacement bolts have been ordered for the re-build....

Everything looks really good in here, the guts were just removed and stored for now..

Big box-o-bits

Then the crank case went for a week's holiday at Arrow Engineering as recommended by my preferred engineering company who unfortunately did not have the type of milling machine needed for this, £40 later it was time to clean it up and get that black brushed-on paint off,

Fantastic stuff, but my rubber gloves were next to useless with it, a good dollop of caution is needed and it's left a few little bits but the dremel/wire brush will sort those.
It now looks like this.

https://img716.imageshack.us/img716/1574/dscf0129p.jpg
That last bit might need building back up slightly but I will see how it goes.

The next job is to replace the bearings, they got a bit of swarf in them and are lumpy, despite being blasted out with various things, a local bearing company say they should have these bearings on stock and there's a gearbox company just down the road who should remove the old blind bearings for a few beer tokens, I don't own a blind bearing puller Embarassed

I want mega powa and 100mph init Thumbs Up

Seriously, the head is being left alone really for simplicity so I'm expecting a good boost in mid range torque and maybe a bit more grunt in 5th, the engine it has now makes some really startling noises once it is warmed through but is silent in 2nd so when this lump is fitted for running in the other engine will be pulled apart, Inspected/repaired and then the bike will be up for sale with a choice of capacity's. The left over engine will then be sold as re-conditioned Thumbs Up

All penny's in the pot for a proper bike, SV650 is top of the short list so far.

About 12-13bhp would be an improvement to be fair, but today I spotted a potential problem... The engine number has been made un-readable so the history of this engine is in doubt and I'm wondering what I can do about it.

some bikes were issued without engine numbers.

A CG is more of a proper bike than an SV will ever be, trust me don't go for one you'll be disappointed.
Nice enough looking machines but they have absolutely no delivery, even my RVF lacking power would run rings around one.

As above, delete if possible or re stamp it with the original lettering if you can make it out. takes some detective work though.

I have an SV650 and love it so i guess thats taken some urgency out of it for me but the honda will be done and used over winter.

The guy at the gearbox place is being difficult, being a family friend apparantly means my "10 minuites work" (his words) is being saved for when every thing else is done, the workshop re-painted and he cant be bothered with another cuppa.

I've never known anyone in the motor trade turn down a cuppa Laughing

Will have to give him a call tomorrow..... Again...

On the other hand I have not started stripping the CG yet so I took it out in the snow last week, much fun Mr. Green

It'd be really good to see just how much power can be got out of a CG. Big bore, different cams and timing, skin head, flow things, bigger carb, supercharger? Razz
