 |
|
Hey guys! I don't often post, but I read through here virtually daily anyways so I'm currently on a ybr 125, which I bought new and have put a fraction over 3000 miles on... Its a bike I love, ill go out when ever I have spare time, I passed my full test on the 7th of this month (A2 since I'm only 19) and took the ybr on its first motorway trip its ever had, incorporated into an 80 mile ride, let's just say I was sore after anyways so I was going to wait till after the winter to 'go big' but I actually can't wait any longer I'm craving more power and want to go further! So since before passing my test, and long before I've been looking at potential bigger bikes and I've basically set my heart on a sports tourer!
Speeding this story up a little I went down to a local dealership the other day and saw a cbr600f (2000), beautiful bike and whacked down a deposit on it with a view to purchasing the rest on finance (something I have no problem with) but got a phone call saying even though it had been accepted they want a deposit of 4 or 5 hundred more than I can afford LOL! They're looking at other options and we shall see how that pans out And if there is a possibility I can have that bike I think I'll probably take it.
But through out looking at bikes I've had a continuous interest in the sv650, faired of course, but inline with my last bike I'm kind of tempted to buy new, for the security, cheapness (of the sv) and just having a new bike! I love my bike to bits and would keep it, but since riding I've found I need the power of a bigger bike and a fairing too, but I still would like a smallER bike, a bit bigger than the ybr but not like some bandit I sat on... IT WAS HUGE!
So yeah just wondering, I really want to buy through a dealership again for the security of it, I personally don't feel buying and selling a bike privately, and sure a second hand bikes cheaper, but either way its going to be on finance should I consider a new SV? I mean surely I can't get bored of it THAT quickly... In 2 years time it'll be a different bike with the restriction out
EDIT: I should probably say, I don't have a car license and nor do I plan on getting one, I intend to use this as an all year round for all uses bike, including a few occasional trips to liverpool a year, it will be getting a lot of use! |

No idea what your job situation and basic pay are like but at that age you can do without a £200 a month debt to pay. We are still living in a country that's nursing an economic hangover and anything can happen; those that thought they were safe in their jobs have been proven wrong and things don't look to get getting any peachier. Buy a new bike and have it taken from you because you can't keep up repayment, and you're left with nothing but a bill. Buy a bike outright that's yours and, yeah, something might need paying for afterwards but whatever way you look at it it's yours and no-one can take it from you. |
Not harsh, I completely understand where you're coming from! I left school and started out on the dole (it was leave home or go on it, not my choice, and I absolutely hated it, got work asap!) which gave me a better understanding of how to manage money, and and even if I lost my job through redundancy, I'd always make sure my outgoings could be covered by money I have or though I dread to say it, if I should ever have to go on it again the dole. That said right now I pay my way, taxes and live comfortably wiht my current loan, this one would just have to be spread out a but more :p |

Well, one thing's for sure fella - it's good to see a 19 year old with a solid proper attitude like you're showing, so for that - it's a from me.
If I were looking at a new bike, I think the SV wouldn't be a bad choice but I'd check what the depreciation is going to be like. I can imagine with the best will in the world that after 2 years you'll get it de-restricted and be interested by its new speed for about 6 months and then want out of it, and onto something else. I suppose if your long game is to swap bikes every 3 years for something new you can't go too far wrong as long as you accept the cost that comes with that.
Good luck in whatever you decide |

Cheers appreciate that, I am still hesitant about it and I'm not dropping that sort of money on it till I'm 101% sure about it xD but thats why I came to you guys, Ideally I'd like a bike which would last for 5 or so years, will an sv satisfy there do you reckon? :/
And TeamMCS I think you were in the same position as me, although being only 19 my insurance is sliiightly more expensive :p probably bringing, for the first year at least all inclusive to the cost of around £200 a month. And if the dole ever did kick in I'd have to cancel insurance and have it sitting there .
Pinkyfloyd; the new rider is something which also makes me unsure, by no means am I am agressive rider, I stick within my limits, but like to try to move on slowly. I guess I'm slightly nervous about spilling on this one, but as of yet I've not had an off, but then again likely being a case of not if, but when, its probably over due for me :p its not something you choose to do, neither do I ride worrying about but its at the back of my mind sometimes. And it would make life rather difficult I guess
It was the 0% deals that orginally got me looking new again, and then thinking no, and looking at the cbr, wondering how, being a 10 year old bike it had been treated, if it had been looked after, warmed up before running it hard, and realistically whether without a drop I can find myself with a bill for fixing it, without a spill or anything! |

Mine's a 97 R at 36k ish and has NEVER let me down, not even in the slightest, in the coming up 18 months/5k miles I've had it. That's not to say it won't, but in total that bike's cost me ~£200 in depreciation in that time whereas a new bike would have cost me 3 x that just rolling it out of the showroom. |
Sure enough! I guess I'll really have to follow up on this cbr f4, it looks in good enough condition, from a very nice dealership who I have full confidence in, although if it turns out impossible its not happenning xD I'm awaiting a phonecall tomorrow, I'll keep you guys posted, hopefully somehow a window will open, it iS a beautiful bike |

When you do get the bigger bike, whatever it is, it'll scare you slightly to start with :o but get used to it gently, dont just throw your leg over and go for it. Even a small jump to a 250 feels alot when you've been on a 125.
But i'll +1 the thought of a 2nd hand bike, i wouldnt get settled down yet, wait atleast till your restrictions over, you need something that can get you through those 2 years, that you wont mind dropping, that you can learn on, i found a cb250n for £250, its a shitter, but it runs well, and i dont really mind if i drop it, thats what i bought it for. It'll cruise at 70 and push to 80 (takes a bit of time) But even thats the speed limit, and i doubt in 2 years time it'll have depreciated much from £250
The one thing i do want more of, is the power to accelerate.. not so much top speed. But for overtaking
Whatever you do, dont go into it half hearted, because you'll regret it, make sure you make a concrete decision ____________________ A2 Passed 18/6/10 |

I had the same dilema earlier this year. (Although I like bandits, but then I'm huge too ).
Looked at lots of bikes, the 0% deals were very tempting, but in the end I decided that I didn't want to spend the money on a lovely brand new bike, then put a load of miles on it crippled by the restrictor. By the time the 2 years was up, I'd be hiting full power on a "secondhand bike" anyway.
So, split the difference and spent £3k and a little bit on a 3 year old Bandit (well, a grand really as I got £2k for the Varadero as trade-in). Got a clean, tidy, original bike for half(ish) the price of new - I reckon without looking at the plate, few would know. At the same time it already had some miles on it so I'm not feeling like I have to keep it 100% perfect all the time, or that I'm spending the biggest lump of depriciation going slowly (*cough*) on 33bhp.
My next bike may well be new  ____________________ Honda Varadero 125cc => Suzuki Bandit 650 33bhp => 77bhp =>

Takes about 20 mins or so to get used to the clutch etc..... takes longer to get used to the bike itself. But dont be afraid or nervous. You will love it.
The fact that its in a busy area will go some way towards helping with the control of the bike as the chances are it will be stop start traffic and lots of clutch work just like in mod 1.
When you get out onto the open road just wind the thing open and away you go.
All you need to remember really is that the bike will be exactly the same to ride as the YBR with the only difference being the forward position and the extra power so just be gentle on the throttle and remember to try and hold yourself up with your back rather than your wrists.
You'll end up with either a sore back or wrists. The back will strengthen after a little while, The wrists.... just sit up more ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

Good stuff
I'm just getting sick of things going wrong with my CG125 because it has been so neglected in the past, soon it will be mint (from a mechanical view point) and sold on... Today I put a deposit on a SV650S with the smallest exhaust can I've seen for a while |
