Buying a new pc case.

I've bought a second hand pc for my daughter.
It's in a gaming case which has a crack in it,and the door at the front to hide the dvd drive has a lug snapped off so it won't shut.
The pc itself was to good to turn down with the specs and monitor so i thought i look into changing the case.
I've not done this before so i was wondering if anyone could tell me what to look for so as to get the right one that will fit everything in.

I'd suggest avoiding the absolute cheapest cases because they tend to cause more problems than they solve.

However, a pretty good compromise between price and function would be an Antec / Chieftec case which are really good for building tower systems in my experience.... I have a Chieftec Dragon at the moment, and would happily have another

My bro recently got a new case for his pc, Has a load of fans for keeping it cool (he's got a pretty hardcore gaming component setup) and usb ports on the front.

To say it has a few quite big fans on it, cant really hear it unless the room is completely silent.

For the price of £44 (excl. delivery) its a bargain imo.

I bought a new case the other day. I went for an ultra quiet acoustically dampened one, cost me about £55 i think. Swapping the stuff over isn't hard, but it is time consuming. Tools required: Adjustable spanner, screw driver (cross head)

Unplug everything from the case
Get the sides off the case
Disconnect the power supply from the motherboard, hard drives, CD drives.
Unscrew and remove power supply (or the wires only get in the way)
Disconnect data cables from hard and CD drives.
Disconnect case fans from motherboard
Unscrew motherboard, remove Hard drives and CD drives
Remove the back plate from the rear of the PC

With the new case copy the layout of the brass mounting pins from the old one. Be aware there there are often 2 size of internal thread, so don't mix them up. Test them all by turning in a screw into each before tightening them up into the case with the spanner.
Insert back plate into new case
Put in motherboard, connect up fans etc.
Put in hard drive and CD drive connecting them to the motherboard with cables
Put power supply in last and connect up cables.



Looking at it like that it looks and sounds complicated, but it really isn't. It's worth spending an hour on and getting things right first time, then chucking it together in half an hour then realising you've got something wrong and having to redo things... Like i did finding out that there was 2 thread sizes on the motherboard pins

Maplins do pc cases, from normal run of the mill ones to gaming ones, never bought one so not sure what the qualities like though...

For me having ports at the top front of the case makes life a lot easier as I use my PC to control my DSLR for product photography and its much easier having lots of ports at the front. The case has sound proof which help and easy access to hard drives etc.

Me thinks i'll save it for xmas and there's another one ticked off the list.

When I want something like this I keep an eye on Scan Today Only. Bought loads of stuff there for cheap. Once I even bought a server case with a proper redundant PSU setup for £2.50!
