The very best way to understand corners, is to go out with an experienced rider (or better still take the IAM / Rospa courses).

Every single corner is different, and so much must be taken into account, weather, other traffic position, potholes, diesel, your road position, the gear you're in, the speed you're travelling at, visiblilty, road markings, disappearing point, clarity of mind....the list is endless.

I've been riding for 30 years, and passed the IAM course last year. I now enjoy riding infinitely more now than I did before, but I'm still learning.

Someone mentioned adopting racing lines......don't do it on our roads....EVER! Save it for the track days. That's why biking fatalities are as high as they are.

Sorry if I sound like a preacher, but I work in the funeral trade and I've seen too many families torn apart (not to mention the bodies torn apart). Riding progressively with confidence, awareness and safety in mind, and you'll still enjoy the ride without any of the gut wrenching close shaves that we've all experienced!

End of sermon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that this is exactly my point 1stGarry. Sometimes at 30mph on a busy very twisty road you miss bits of this information, any one of which could have you in the ditch (or under a lorry).

At 60mph on the same road you are working really hard to process ALL of this, if I'm working hard and talking to myself about everything I can see and everything I could be doing about it, just on a normal ride out I find my speed drops below the NSA anyway, and I am NOT a slow old git, I don't always ride like this but sometimes it really helps to force the routine into your brain

I can talk constantly about what I can see now on the open road, go out with a police rider in radio contact and you will be AMAZED at the stuff you miss

At 80/90 mph you are lucky to process anything except brake-lean-gas and NONE of the above

at least if you are trained and experienced in applying the system which helps to assess all this information then you can apply a bit more of your brain to the other bits when you are "on one"

Afaik they don't teach offsiding anymore

average riders just aren't smart enough to know when it's safe to use it

again afaik it's a Rospa fail and probably IAM too

although I have been encouraged by Police riders to do it you really do need to be absolutely sure

People in general get upset when they see you doing it too. The person driving the vehicle you are trying to anticipate feels you are encroaching on "their territory".

I have been told as much by several people in my home town after they have met me 'making progress' on my way home from work on a friday night (on a very twisty road I know VERY well). They still don't like it even when you explain why it is safe. If you are doing something that makes other road users feel uncomfortable, it is probably best no to do it at all.

I have no idea what offsiding is, but if i'm overtaking and the oncoming traffic is far awy, I will put a lot of distance between me and the car I am overtaking.

Some on coming cars get upset by this and flash me, but I know where I am and where my bike is going to be, I just leave room between me and the cars I am passing in case they decide to do something stupid.

offsiding has nothing to do with anyone else

it's basically using the whole road to improve your view of left handers and possibly get advance warning of a problem

like by being in the right hand gutter instead of at the white line on approach

as stinky says, it does upset people so best left to the experts with blue lights and siren I feel as if you get it wrong and can't get back to your own lane in time it means a head on

Just wanting to confirm it's still okay (won't get stopped) for using the other side of the road when safe to do so (may be different from offsiding discussion).

For example, I can take the 'pretty' way home down some twisting country lanes. I can keep straight course as the road kinks by cutting across to the other side of the road. It's good visibility so a know if there's anything coming the other way. It is cornering but not Wink

as long as it's not a solid white line system and you aren't speeding it shouldn't be a problem

Providing you comply with the road markings, no problem. Do not cross a solid white line unless it has a dotted white line along your side of it. Do not enter chevroned areas unless they have a broken white line as a border.

Ta. Thought so, just checking. My paranoia level must be up today.
It's mainly country lanes so either dashed, very faded dashed or no markings at all Rolling Eyes Very Happy

If you are going to use the full width of the road, especially on corners and twisty country lanes, ask yourself this question:

"If another vehicle came speeding round the corner, could you take evasive action?"

There is no law that states we must ride on the left at all times, it is simply common sense that if we rode on the right we wouldn't last very long.

I did offer a discounted advanced training day a few months ago for those who live within the Thames Valley and surrounding areas, if anyone wants to make use of the offer, then I am happy to reserrect it again!

£80 for a full day providing there is a minimum of 2 people against my normal full day price of £200 per person. As many of you know, I am a qualified advanced instructor and examiner (I train and test the advanced instructors) and i have a Police class 1 background.

As I say if anyone is interested!

Just so you know i hated being on the wrong side of the road and still do! I was taught it but i dont use that system unless it gives me a safety advantage which is rare but once or twice it helped on smaller country roads. I only ever had one accident on a bend, and that was a bloody Volvo driver who decided the best place to u turn was on a blind bend!! Shocked I was duty bound to ride into his drivers door with my beloved ZX10 Crying or Very sad That was a left hander too!
