Please could you give me some advice.

I have had my 2002 CG since June and had no problems with it at all until a couple of weeks ago. Since then whenever I start it up it idles really slowly, but as soon as I touch the throttle it cuts out. I've had to start it several times every day before finally being able to move off.

Now it doesn't even start at all until I've had several goes at it.

I know it's colder now, and more damp, and I've tried with and without choke (the choke lever has 3 settings...off, "on a bit" or "on a lot") , and I don't have a shed or garage so it's always outside...but is it me or the bike?? And either way, what should I be doing to fix it?

If it wont start even with the choke on then change the battery. This time of year is murder for old batterys. Mine died after the first cold spell this weekend.

If it starts then keep the choke open either half or full untill you hear the revs pick up. If it cuts out and after a few attempts it wont start then chances are you've flooded it so leave it to sit for a little while and try again.

If you get it started keep the revs busy for a little while just to warm the engine up.

Can also try fiddling with the carb tick over switch.

This. More or less.

My limited experience of 125s taught me they hate being run cold. OK in summer - a pain in winter. Just let it idle a few minutes before you ride it, for it to warm up and it'll run fine.

If there's an idle adjuster, increase it, then start the bike and let it sit till normal t*.

When you turn off the choke, the idle revs should sit in place and engine shouldn't stall - if it does, increase idle speed. If no idle adjuster is avail, keep the revs up 0-15% above your normal idle speed till bike's warmed up.

P.S. Don't be enthusiastic with the starter, or you'll drain the battery.

Post Scriptum 2: 4-stroke non-injected 125 in the winter, now there's the fun. Very Happy A thing to consider for everyone looking for a commuter.

With full choke on mine it drags so much fuel it will not run at all, handy for priming it though. On CG's the choke does not open the throttle to raise the revs, its almost the definition of basic.

Full choke and a couple of kicks and it tries to fire.
Choke to half
A good kick and she's away.

No lecky start on mine, you posh git Laughing Laughing

Really? Mine often starts first kick no choke even in the cold!

Mine often does too, surprised my dad the other day when he gave it "just 1 gentle kick" and it fired up, but occasionally it acts up and that little procedure has only failed when numbnuts here forgot to turn the fuel tap to reserve Embarassed

Thank you all for your advice. My bike has behaved better the last few days...I guess it knew I was talking about it Smile

I've been letting it tick over for a little while & then switching choke off (or forgetting to do so, and getting to work with it still on) Embarassed Good job it's only a 5 minute ride! It was more worrying on the days when it started then cut out immediately because then there was nothing I could do, except try again (lots of times).

Very Happy I do have the option of using the kickstart too! Might be a good idea when stressed over a non-start...!!

I reckon my CG thinks its days are numbered as I'm taking my test soon...but I'm passing the CG on to my partner as he did his CBT in July and hasn't been on a bike since. Just took him to Lincoln bike show to get some gear, so now he hasn't any excuse...and I don't have to part with my little first bike Smile

I had a very similar problem, checked electrics, carb and cleaned the tank, turned out it was a blockage in the fuel filter, £1.50 for a new one and it starts much easier now.

This may be relevant. Running on full choke can cause a huge amount of soot to build up in the engine and, relevantly, on the sparkplug which can stop it sparking or make the spark very weak.

For the couple of quid they cost, I'd suggest changing the plug, or at least having a look at it to see if it's all black and sooty.

Change for a more high octane one and blow a one in the piston(s). Twisted Evil

It sounds like a good ride out would do your engine a lot of good, at least half an hour with some high speed roads included.

With cars that get driven short distances all the time an *Italian tune up* often works wonders...

* A damned good thrashing to burn the carbon out.

Thanks again for your tips. I'm just having to be a bit more patient & let it tick over for a bit. On the odd day it still cuts out as soon as it starts, but mostly it will tick over, albeit slowly.

I don't think riding with the clutch still on is the problem, as I've only done that twice, on half choke, for a 5 minute ride, but I'll try not to do it again, and in between my daily 5 minute commutes to work I do take it on random rides & give it the "Italian tune up" treatment, so don't think that's the problem either.

All the other advice I will look into if things don't go according to plan from hereon...thank you Smile
