Have got a Honda XLR 125R, and i usually get about 60-65 when cruising, and can usually get up any hill in 4th gear, but for the past 100 mile or so have noticed that the power seems to have dropped a lot, and am having trouble hitting 60, and am having to drop to 3rd on quite gentle hills, any idea what might be causing this?

Thanks Thumbs Up

Hey there, well first question is what mileage is the engine. It could be that the rings are worn beyond servicability and need replacing. A check for this would be a compression test (ask any garage, they'd charge you a fiver if anything). Compression should be 156-198psi . Other than that im not sure, have you over filled the engine oil? That could possible cause a lack of power. Also so could large dents in the exhaust (once had a field car that went over some rocks and kicked the exhaust, causing it to loose a heck of a lot of power), could possbily if it's been used off road. Another thing is tyre presures, if they are under inflated performance can suffer due to the increased rolling resistance. The airfillter could be choked up restricting power, choke may be sticking or other possbile carbueration faults. Just a few ideas that may be worth checking. Good luck, hope it's an easy fix Thumbs Up .

bloddy hell, a lot of things to bear in mind there! The engine has certainly done a fair distance 19k+ in its 3 years, but i don't know how much, if any of the engine has been replaced. I did however slacken the chain a bit yesterday, and this seemed to get it going a bit faster, think i must have tightened it too much when putting wheel back on after repairing puncture. Just hoping its not too slack now.

Thanks again

Andrew

Plugs:
check the spark, make sure its fat, bright, regular, check it when the engine is hot and when it is cold.

Seals: check your piston rings, make sure they are not worn or damaged, this will result in lower compression and poor performance

Don't worry, just add a bit of sugar to the petrol tank and it'll go faster again. The more you add the faster it will then go. Very Happy Thumbs Up

Try if it you want, but don't blame me if it goes too fast, or won't go at all.

I tried your sugar thing, but it doesn't seem to have worked, the bike started spluttering and now it won't start, do I have to do something else?
