I thought my valve tappets needed adjusting because the engine on my gs125 started tapping like mad.

Did that and realised there was no oil in the window. Topped up but the noise is still there.

Have I buggered my top end? What could have happened?

A friend did this with an RV125, the sight glass had an oil stain on it from the bike being sat for a few years, he assumed this was the oil level and never topped it up. The engine locked solid so badly that 3 of us couldn't get the cylinder off it to fix things.

Sounds like you've worn your top end parts down enough to create some gaps, free play and noise. If it were anything other than a 125 i'd recommend stripping inspecting and replacing things as needed, which might cost a fortune if spares couldn't be found on ebay. As it's a 125 though i'd recommend adjusting the tappets to make it quieter and see how it goes. If the bike is very down on power i'd recommend getting rid of it. If it's not down on power i'd still recommend getting rid of it once you've done your test

Tappets are easily adjusted by removing the inspection cover on the engine, then with the aid for feeler gauges adjust them to what the manual says.

GS motors are extremely tough. If it's not actually gone bang and it's not down on power, it'll probably soldier on and be OK. Hopefully

yes you have buggered it

mate of mine did the same thing. very loud tapping noise at idle. bike has around 80000 miles on the clock. its been sitting in the garden for a few months and still starts on the button. its a honda, nuff said.

low oil may damage the cam chain, crank bearings, things like that

Well it runs fine. It is down on power, not much. Will still do 50 but tapping gets very loud 7krpm+

I can get a chinese barrel and piston kit for £75 delivered or even a big bored 150cc kit for the same price.

Ok, so new valve gear and head.

I will have a look how much that costs.

Tapping does sound like it is coming from right at the top in the middle. I am not going to take the cam cover off because last time me and Chris did that, it was a PITA to get back together and I need this bike every day pretty much.

I had a similar thing on my Gs before i sold it, It would tap like there was something bouncing around the top end, but only at 4k revs, anything above of under it and it was fine

Just keep riding it and keep topping the oil up, untill inevitably it explodes

You could just check the clearances just in case.

Op, the valves may be fine but check the camshaft lobs and the followers for wear, these are easily replaced, also check your valve guide oil seals and camshaft oil seal and replace if needed and check for any float on the camshaft/cylinder head faces.
