Lately I seem to be getting in to the habit of riding one-handed when I'm trundling along with light city traffic...

Just wondering, would this be classed as not being fully in control, or maybe even dangerous driving/riding??

As I see it, I've probably driven a car for hundreds or even thousands of miles over the years with only one hand on the wheel, but riding the bike it's obviously more noticeable to other road users, and to plod.

So is there anything specific that says I'm committing an offence??

I'd hazard a guess that it depends what mood a traffic copper's in.

Dad rides with one hand on his hip sometimes. In my opinion, for looking as gay as that, you ought to get a prison sentence.

What about doing hand signals? They require you to ride one handed. Can't see them making that one stick.

I've known a couple of people get a riding without due care & attention for that. The cops would argue that driving one handed is safer because cars are a lot more stable than bikes.

On long rides i sometimes rest my hand/arm on the tank. I have been known to let go with both hands and have a stretch.
I also stretch my legs out when on a long ride.

On a long trip I tend to rest my left hand when pootling on a straight 'easy' bit or through quiet 30mph areas; obviously clear of immediate hazards and traffic Confused I'd be pretty fed up if I was prosecuted for this, but knowing how grumpy and pernickety Police seem to be these days, I reckon I'd stand a good chance of being fed up if I was 'caught' so I wouldn't do it in front of a PC knowingly for this reason! Rolling Eyes

I don't get cramped legs, as mine aren't long enough but the guys I ride with all seem to have cranky knees and need to have a leg stretch. Rolling Eyes

I've done it once or twice when I've had a long stretch of the same road.

Im pretty sure riding with no hands or feet on the bike would be frowned upon by the police! Razz

On a more sensible note (!), Yeah, likewise on long rides i have a habit of strecthing arms / legs when i can, in light traffic i have a habit of riding one handed also and occasionally using my left hand to hold the left pillion grab rail (i have long arms, can do this easily)

Went past traffic police like this, they followed for a bit but didnt stop me - Does it say legally where / to which bit on the bike you should be holding on??

I got pulled by a bloody minded copper for taking my hand/s off the bike.
My arms were aching after a long ride and I took my left hand off the bars and gave it a rest down by my side.
I then did the same thing with my right hand as I went down a very mild slope.

My bad luck as the "blues & twos" started behind me!?? and I pulled over.
The copper gave me a lecture about how serious and dangerous my behaviour was Rolling Eyes
I could`nt be bothered to argue my side ie I was always in control and the only traffic around was me and him.
So I let him blah blah blah away until he got bored, and then I said "sorry orificer" .
the main issue for him was that I was not in full control of my bike Rolling Eyes so careless driving was mentioned Rolling Eyes

Anyway he must of got bored, as he said I could go without any further action being taken (so very kind of him).

So it seems to be a fairly widely done riding habit...
Everyone knows it's not exactly DAS test standard riding, but as long as you're sensible (and you're not unlucky enough to meet Judge Dredd in a Police uniform) it should be OK??
Cool Thumbs Up

I do it all the time.

And if it was illegal, bikes with suicide shifters would not be aloud on the road.

I do it a lot of the time to be honest. A roads are easier with your arm resting on the tank.

IMO, if you have a brain (which if you passed your test, you must do) you can quite easily read the road, and realise when you need to make the clutch hand available.

I do it all the time, don't do it for particularly long though as I tend to need the clutch Smile

LoL no they aren't!

Bikes travel naturally in a straight line, cars weave like hell.

on the back of this, my boxers always seem to ride up under my jeans, so i quickly jump off at lights and sort myself out. I've not done this in front of coppers, but i wonder what the stance would be. Sometimes, at familiar lights that i know will take ages i get off and have a good old stretch.

Arrest probably.

Followed by a charging with indecent exposure.

HTH, Thumbs Up.

I remember riding one handed for several miles with a cop car following me 20ft behind. They didn't pull me and turned off after a while.

Suppose the right cunt could decide to pull you over and give you stick about it but I don't think most would.

Ahh, the beauty of wearing undershorts Very Happy Get a pair. They hurt after wearing them all day, though. Feels like they are pulling the hairs out of your legs but they never ride up and I never get wedgies. Its heaven.

I regularly rest my left hand on the tank in light traffic. Quite often put my feet up onto the crash bungs for a few minutes for a change of position too Wink

I know that but that's what the cops will say, because they drive one handed all the time (with the other one on their radio, or eating a donut, or drinking coffee etc - but they've been specially trained, which is why they never crash or drive like total bellends Wink ).

This is, of course, another thing that tends to pertain to scooter riders and sports bikers.

Along with tailgating, pointless overtaking, excessive revving, etc.

Proving my theory that chavs on mopeds and sports bikers, in many cases, are peas in a pod.

Lets face facts, the hand on knee sports bike look, is just a pose. It's a look-at-me: I've so such power I don't even need to bother with gears. If you realy are uncomfortable, perhaps you need to get a more comfortable bike? Just a thought.
