hi all, ive got a scottoiler and its ran out. can i put anything else in it or just the scottoiler stuff thats 9 quid a bottle posted?

im off on a 100 mile round trip and ive no spray lube but ive other things here. ive got mech oil, essentially duck oil, will i be ok to put that in it? it just flings off the chain and doesnt last long but if its in the oiler at least i will have piece of mind that it is being lubricated.

any other suggestions?

For a 100 mile trip just scrub some engine oil on the chain with a toothbrush (use hers if available) before you go.

I wouldn't have thought using a different oil (so long as its not too heavy) would cause any problems?

I do just over a hundred miles in a week travelling to work and back, and if I lubed my chain once a week, my bike would think itself very fortunate indeed.

In fact at the moment all I have is this green can of spray-on chain wax ...? I leave it behind my front wall by the rubbish bin so its somewhere I can easily see and remember to do it ... I do try and remember to do it at the very least after its rained, so the fact that its raining more frequently recently ... means my bike prolly thinks its had a birthday or something.

Any oil will do the job, the only issue you may encounter will be the viscosity (thinner/thicker) so it may drip quicker or not drip at all.

I dont know how the Scottoiler oil compares to say normal 10w40 engine oil etc

May require trail and error to get it right.

I seem to recall reading that ATF was a reasonable replacement for scottoil

Other than that engine oil and toothbrush. Wipe excess off or have it fling everywhere.

In theory O ring chains don't even need to be lubed except that it stops corrosion starting which would soon mess them up.
No need to worry about it for a few days.

I know 80W/90 works very well... it seems to be the best consistency for staying on the chain not the back wheel.

normally sold as gear oil

tried duck oil..... yeh it just all pissed out in about 3 seconds, went and bought some proper scott oil for 8 quid at local dealer, will last about 6 months its a big bottle. ive heard 80/90's works a treat before and i was considering it but it wasnt much more for the proper stuff it was designed to handle so went in that direction, cheers for the advice though. Thumbs Up

Always use 80/90 Gear Oil, Just rub abit in and drizzle on the sprocket and chain as it spins on the stand. Works a treat Smile It's a really fucking SHIT chain as well, and it STILL doesn't stretch or deform or fuck teeth or anything Smile

I was fortunate to meet Mr. Scott Oiler who invented the Scotoiler.
I asked him what magical ingredients go into the oil.
He told me an oil company looks after the blend for summer/winter and that the additives prevent corrosion and oxidation and stuff.

Of course he's not going to tell me the recipe. Smile

Engine oil would be near enough for a 100 mile trip and reduce the feed to lowest.

I've put EP90 in a scotoiler before. No problems. You need to turn it up higher though. I've also put used engine oil through them.

At the end of the day, it's a plastic container with a tube attached and a small needle valve in the bottom. When the engine is on, the valve is sucked open and the oil can run out through it. The flow adjuster alters how far the valve opens

You could put pretty much any liquid in it and providing it doesn't either attack the plastic or make the valve stick open/shut, it'll deliver it to the chain.

I know a lot of people do this, so I tried it!

Worst idea ever! It started to rain, the oil got washed off the chain, and on to my back tyre, made for an interesting ride home!

At least with proper chain lube this doesn't happen!
