Took my WR250F for an MOT today (first one since I have had it) - For the MOT, I had taken off the loud pipe and put the standard one I got with it back on.

To my amazement, the MOT tester failed it on the zorst ... Shocked

Sure enough, even thought it is the stock exhaust and it has a Yamaha stamp on it, it is also labelled 'Not for road use' Doh!

What's that all about?!?! Confused

Ghey standard 'zorst

Thats just crazy. They sell a road going bike that according to the MOT people you cant ride on the road.

Thats a dispute I would take up with Yamaha

The WR250F is billed more as an 'event' (enduro/MX) bike that can be road legal, whereas the WR250R is billed as the road bike. As such the bikes are different in a number of respects.

I can't believe you ride green lanes with an especially loud can and continue to shout about it. I'd really suggest in your position you try and keep your nose a tad cleaner than it currently is Rolling Eyes

EDIT: details below, as this is General Bike Chat rather then Offroad, in case folk aren't aware of the different bikes!

WR250F - Competition

WR250R - Adventure / Dual Purpose

Yeah that is pretty awful and I am surprised Yamaha is getting away with it. Is that definitely a standard exhaust for that bike and not just a Yamaha exhaust from a competition bike put on road bike by some dealer?

Like I said above the WR250F is a competition bike, hence the likelyhood that the standard exhaust system is not road legal. I'd expect that when buying from new from a dealer if you were planning on using it on-road you would be able to ask for a different system, maybe the same one as the WR250R, but I don't know for sure.

I keep my dep pipe on my WR for MOT's. It doesn't say 'not for road use' so, despite being much louder then the stock pipe, it gets away with being on Smile

Although saying its much louder, it only really barks when its at its peak so from about 10k +. Idelling isn't too bad.

That is a bit crazy though Confused Wonder if the new WR's are the same ? I'll check my mates '08 WR450 tonight and let you know.

There is no way this is a competition exhaust ... it weighs a tonne and is VERY quiet (hugely restrictive)! Very Happy

The bike has been a road bike/road registered from new. Even more annoyingly is that I bought it from a dealer (I am the 2nd owner), it still had several months MOT on it when I bought it (so it had passed 1 MOT with that zorst), but I insisted it have a full/fresh MOT at time of sale ... (so 2 MOTs!)

So the dealer MOT'd it with a blatantly (when you look - it is VERY quiet) non road legal pipe.

Oh and as for my after-market pipe I took off for the MOT, I bought it mostly to try and gain some low-mid power which the WR has feck all, but it IS more noisy than this stock one (which is whisper quiet) ... I don't mind the noise as to be honest, from a safety point of view, the more people can hear me coming the better!!! Thumbs Up

I'd find another mot tester, that one is way too picky. Looks like he was specifically looking to fail it. Thumbs Down

It's not uncommon for bikes that have met type-approval to be not actually legal for road use anyway!
And yes, this is a competition enduro bike, just a Yamaha, which tend to be overly heavy Razz.

Definitely not surprised that a dealer got a dodgy MOT. 'Will put 12 months on when you get it' always worries me when I see it in an advert.

I have been going to this chap with an array of bikes for years, he has always been very 'fair' ... to be honest, part of the job is to look for a stamp on the zorst, if it has 'not for road use' on it, then ... well it does!! ... just the same as I'd expect a tyre with not for road use to be an auto fail - and not being 'too picky' ... there are things that are down to discretion (like bearing play for instance) but something that says 'not for road use' says it!!

My gripe here is not with this MOT dude, but with the shop that slapped an MOT on it when they sold it to me ...

That and Mr Yamaha for selling a bike in the first place with a rubbish exhaust that is no good for competition or road - it isn't even ascetically pleasing - it looks like a droopy d1ck at the back!!! Very Happy

To be honest, the dealer I bought it from clearly just slapped an MOT on it ... as I noticed when I got it that it didn't have a front brake light switch! (another no-brainer for an MOT). So I had to sort that myself ... (just a banjo switch and some wiring).

So they can charge you a few thousand for a new bike then force you to pay another couple of hundred just to keep the bike on the road by making you buy an after market exhaust.

What a load of pish! To me it just defies logic. Personally I wouldnt buy a new bike if I knew I would have to shell out for cans just to put it through its MOT. Normally you buy cans as an upgrade and put the factory ones on for the MOT

No G sir, I know 50% of the laws are illogical and half are ridiculous but one would think that the manufacturers would make it appealing for us to buy their product by actually making it fully road legal.

They might have just failed it solely because it said it isn't road legal.

My DRZ passed its MOT with an Arrow can on Thumbs Up Not mega loud but not road legal - but no mention of being road legal or not on the actual pipe.

If I write not for road use on my exhaust does it automatically become illegal? :p

Perhaps its just a cosmetic thing Smile

Ridiculously quiet exhaust (are there emissions standards for bikes?) can't see why it isn't road legal apart from the stamp.

People still buy it when it's not - especially when you don't have to worry about it for three years and the dealer will manage to sell it to some chump after anyway Razz.

Possible the exhaust may have been stamped due to it not being cat'd enough or something or possibly for other areas.

Has anyone read the wording of the above add I posted ... clicky

It is the same exhaust as mine (stamped: YAMAHA 5TJ-60) Seems he thinks it is road legal .... but it says on it NOT FOR ROAD USE Confused

The little penis bit on the end does have E3 stamped on it ... (not sure what E3 means).

EDIT: Google found me this:-
"E3 - Italy"

I remember a large number of years ago a mate being stopped and ticketed for having a back tyre marked 'Not For road Use' on the side. It was a Full Knobly on a trail bike.
Under the C&U regs at the time, the tyre was perfectly legal, it had far more than the legally mandated minimum tread depth... I think it was still 1mm or something and this had like one inch rubber spikes on it!
He took the ticket into the police station, and asked to speak to the Duty inspector, having found a copy of the C&U regs and, carrying the tyre, demanded them to explain WHY he had to pay the fine......
Conclusion was that NFRU on the tyre wall had no legal standing in the UK, it was marked for the US market, where it ALSO wasn't a legal requirement in all states, but apparently an 'advisory note' to comply with US Numpty consumer laws, if some-one road on tarmac with it!

I think this MAY be a similar case. The exhaust noise & marking regs have been revised time after time in the last few years. We had the BS marking requirements, which were proved to be un-enforceable, and then the E-marking.

Under C&U regs its purely on a noise test, so sold new, the bike, if quiet, possibly passed UK road NOISE emmissions.

More than likely in the US, that cans not road legal becouse of polution emmission regs, hence NFRU stamping.

Come MOT time, I dot know what the actual letter of the criteria are at the moment, but do know that they have to check marking, other wise its 'must not be unduly noisy' or something discretionary.

Down to Testers discretion I would imagine.

One may listen to it and think.... err THATS not noisy.... Hmmm I didn't see that stamp!

Another may look at stamp and think.... well it SAYS!

I'd try polishing it out..........

I do wonder at it all though..... there seems so many anomolies, like Chinese bikes.

Designs that are deemed obsolete becouse they dont meet UK & Euro emmission controls any more, being copied in china and imported & sold..... I presume through the back door, on 'indivivual approval' via self registration.... which I think has allowed a lot of pure competition bikes to be registered too..... they pass single approval, but dont pass MOT!?!?!

What year is your wr ?

I checked my original exhaust last night, and mates '08 WR450.
And they both have a 4-5 lined paragraph stamped on them Laughing
Saying they are road legal, and are below 86db and omit the correct emmisions.

So dunno where your exhaust came from Confused ? Possible A YZF ??
