 |

Took my WR250F for an MOT today (first one since I have had it) - For the MOT, I had taken off the loud pipe and put the standard one I got with it back on.
To my amazement, the MOT tester failed it on the zorst ...
Sure enough, even thought it is the stock exhaust and it has a Yamaha stamp on it, it is also labelled 'Not for road use'
What's that all about?!?!
Ghey standard 'zorst

I keep my dep pipe on my WR for MOT's. It doesn't say 'not for road use' so, despite being much louder then the stock pipe, it gets away with being on
Although saying its much louder, it only really barks when its at its peak so from about 10k +. Idelling isn't too bad.
That is a bit crazy though Wonder if the new WR's are the same ? I'll check my mates '08 WR450 tonight and let you know. ____________________ Rides: '05 Yammy WR290-F |

There is no way this is a competition exhaust ... it weighs a tonne and is VERY quiet (hugely restrictive)!
The bike has been a road bike/road registered from new. Even more annoyingly is that I bought it from a dealer (I am the 2nd owner), it still had several months MOT on it when I bought it (so it had passed 1 MOT with that zorst), but I insisted it have a full/fresh MOT at time of sale ... (so 2 MOTs!)
So the dealer MOT'd it with a blatantly (when you look - it is VERY quiet) non road legal pipe.
Oh and as for my after-market pipe I took off for the MOT, I bought it mostly to try and gain some low-mid power which the WR has feck all, but it IS more noisy than this stock one (which is whisper quiet) ... I don't mind the noise as to be honest, from a safety point of view, the more people can hear me coming the better!!! ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity. |

I'd find another mot tester, that one is way too picky. Looks like he was specifically looking to fail it. |

They might have just failed it solely because it said it isn't road legal.
My DRZ passed its MOT with an Arrow can on Not mega loud but not road legal - but no mention of being road legal or not on the actual pipe. ____________________ KTM 990 SMT & Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM |

If I write not for road use on my exhaust does it automatically become illegal? :p
Perhaps its just a cosmetic thing
Ridiculously quiet exhaust (are there emissions standards for bikes?) can't see why it isn't road legal apart from the stamp. |

Has anyone read the wording of the above add I posted ... clicky
It is the same exhaust as mine (stamped: YAMAHA 5TJ-60) Seems he thinks it is road legal .... but it says on it NOT FOR ROAD USE
The little penis bit on the end does have E3 stamped on it ... (not sure what E3 means).
EDIT: Google found me this:-

I remember a large number of years ago a mate being stopped and ticketed for having a back tyre marked 'Not For road Use' on the side. It was a Full Knobly on a trail bike.
Under the C&U regs at the time, the tyre was perfectly legal, it had far more than the legally mandated minimum tread depth... I think it was still 1mm or something and this had like one inch rubber spikes on it!
He took the ticket into the police station, and asked to speak to the Duty inspector, having found a copy of the C&U regs and, carrying the tyre, demanded them to explain WHY he had to pay the fine......
Conclusion was that NFRU on the tyre wall had no legal standing in the UK, it was marked for the US market, where it ALSO wasn't a legal requirement in all states, but apparently an 'advisory note' to comply with US Numpty consumer laws, if some-one road on tarmac with it!
I think this MAY be a similar case. The exhaust noise & marking regs have been revised time after time in the last few years. We had the BS marking requirements, which were proved to be un-enforceable, and then the E-marking.
Under C&U regs its purely on a noise test, so sold new, the bike, if quiet, possibly passed UK road NOISE emmissions.
More than likely in the US, that cans not road legal becouse of polution emmission regs, hence NFRU stamping.
Come MOT time, I dot know what the actual letter of the criteria are at the moment, but do know that they have to check marking, other wise its 'must not be unduly noisy' or something discretionary.
Down to Testers discretion I would imagine.
One may listen to it and think.... err THATS not noisy.... Hmmm I didn't see that stamp!
Another may look at stamp and think.... well it SAYS!
I'd try polishing it out..........
I do wonder at it all though..... there seems so many anomolies, like Chinese bikes.
Designs that are deemed obsolete becouse they dont meet UK & Euro emmission controls any more, being copied in china and imported & sold..... I presume through the back door, on 'indivivual approval' via self registration.... which I think has allowed a lot of pure competition bikes to be registered too..... they pass single approval, but dont pass MOT!?!?! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

What year is your wr ?
I checked my original exhaust last night, and mates '08 WR450.
And they both have a 4-5 lined paragraph stamped on them
Saying they are road legal, and are below 86db and omit the correct emmisions.
So dunno where your exhaust came from ? Possible A YZF ?? ____________________ Rides: '05 Yammy WR290-F |
