Logged on stats from active directory

i need to find something out and i'm a little stuck as to where to start.

the end product will be a plasma screen that displays something like the following info

PCs on Level 1 : 10 of 30 in use
PCs on Level 2 : 2 of 66 in use

and so on.

So our place has an Active Directory, which in turn as computers organised into "Levels"

All i want to know is how many PCs are in each levels (suppose this could be hard coded by me counting them but thats not ideal when the manager just removes stuff or adds stuff) and if they are logged on.

I've tried googling and get various suggestions but it seems to go too far, all i need is x of y.

Do you want switched on or logged in?

If it's just switched on then it would be quite simple to have a VBS pull out the names from AD then run through and ping them or perform a simple WMI query if ICMP is blocked.

If you want logged on then that would require a little more work be easily do-able.

If switched on numbers required then a simple script that just polls them all with a ping would suffice.

As part of our login script I log all logins/logouts to a file for each pc (filename is the same as the pc name) with date, username, ip address and various other bits of useful info. I also write to a file where the filename is the username stating date and time. This lets us get useful info quite easily about who's logging into which machine and when. You'd just need a simple script to scan these files to collect the real-time info.

ideally looking for a solution that requires nothing putting onto the pcs as i have no control over them

With a small amount of work This could easily be modified to read AD instead of a text file of computers and output the results you want.
