Okay, so i'm missing the great 2 stroke smell in the morning, the lovely sound of 10k rpm, and the wondefull power band of my old 2 stroke.

I WANT ANOTHER ONE!! Very Happy.

Anyone think of a good old classic 2 stroke project i can get my hands on for not alot of cash?

Specs must be:

2 stroke,
more than one cylinder,
cheap,
under 33bhp,
good looking,

Simple as. any one got any ideas Smile?

Bold ones when combined make it a bit harder, since most of the multi pot strokers I can think of were putting out at least 40bhp

Hi

RD250LC is close on power (think 35hp claimed, so 33hp is probably more realistic), but not really counting as cheap these days. Probably leaves things like an air cooled RD250 or an X7. Anything newer than the RD (such as the KR250, RG250 or MVX250) is likely to be well over 33hp (certainly claimed).

Or if you could have a single then maybe a Gilera NGR250, or a Yamaha SDR200.

If you ignore the 33hp bit then the TZR250 is pretty good compromise between power and reliability. Same for the RG250, but spares for those seem to be getting difficult.

All the best

Keith

Thanks Kieth. was just looking at the rd 250. Exactly the type of thing i was after! shame i cant get away with the 400, as i have a brand new set of carbs for them sitting in my garage.

is there a honda/suzuki/ kawak equivalent to the rd 250?

thanks

Why multi cylinder out of interest?
Suspect older 250s would be the ones to go for (wrote before lots of people said the same Smile ).

You can get old dirt bikes for very reasonable amounts of money.
The KTM350 I had certainly had that 2 stroke 'zing' - a 350cc 2 stroke with no powervalve meant a decent kick when it went on-pipe.
Mine cost me £350 generally working, but would have needed a bit of work for MOT. Get some SM rims laced on and you could have a very fun road bike!

Just the sound of an old multi two stroke is fantastic. singles don't quite do it for me in the same way.

Okay, will check the ktm out.

thanks.

Suzuki equivalent is the X7, Kawasaki the KH250 but no real Honda equivalent. Honda never liked 2 stroke and only relented with the MVX250 and NSR250 when they had no chance of competing with a 4 stroke.

All the best

Two strokes can have many different sounds depending on a lot of different factors. My new KTM easily sounds like 3 different bikes depending on where you are in the rev-range - to the point I kept checking behind me on idle going down hills to see if there was another rider trying to get past Smile.

If you dont mind old.... Suzuki did the Gt 250`s .

Dont let people tell the`re pants, cos the`re not, it`s just thier biased opinion.
I had a handful of them (5) as they were cheap and easy to work on.
not as fast as the RD`s but can be made to go faster than they were made as standard.

what about the fantastic Suzuki X7 250, or the Suzuki X5 200, or the Suzuki GT 185, or the Suzuki GT380 triple, Or the Suzuki GT550 triple?

? You could always do what a friend of mine did ?
He took an old Jawa 350 twin and did a heap of work on it.
This included smoothing out the ports and chamfering thier edges very mildly, getting a better & rejetted carb, expansions, better rear shocks, japanese forks, japanese front wheel, disc`s & caliper, electronic ignition (Boysen I think?).
He did it because he had most of the "stuff" needed lying around in his garage or shed

It was never a threat to an RD or a KH, but it did suprise a few people Smile
I hav`nt seen him in years but I`m sure it still lives in the back of his shed

Found this when looking for a YDS7 (my first 250 stroker)

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/yamaha-dx250-pro-1972-rd250-rd350-yds7-ds7-r5-/260677166706?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item3cb191e672

Not sure if its a cobbled together pile of bits as I don't remember that prefix on Yamaha road bikes but I'm sure the 2 stroke experts will be able to answer that.

I had a KH250 in the very early 80's. Kawasaki green and a totally awesome noise from the exhausts when it was opened up!

Would you fancy a 250cc Jawa?
They remind me 1945 Triumphs.
