Hey guys, i did a search but didnt find much.. basically is it possible to wire a car satnav to be powered off the bike? And will it be able to support the power drain?

And is it a simple case of wiring a lighter socket to it, and plugging it in?

Cheers guys Very Happy

Yes, really simple to do. Buy something like this and you can do it in minutes. I bought a little waterproof box from Maplins and put two sockets into that then just screwed the box in underneath the seat, that way you don't need to go drilling holes in your panels and you can swap the socket(s) from bike to bike in seconds.

You only issue is that car sat navs are obviously not waterproof or weatherproof in any way. If you put it inside the clear top of a tank bag then it should be ok though, power drain for a sat nav is miniscule in comparison to other circuits on the bike so there would be no issues there whatsoever unless you left it plugged in overnight or for longer maybe.

If you have an optimate lead connected to the bike's battery you can get an acessory lead which can be plugged into it with a socket on the end.

I bought one of these in HG a few weeks ago:

Wire in a cigarette lighter socket and store the unit in one of these, keeps it water proof. Just strap it your bars with the velcro on the back and all is good Thumbs Up .

Any wiring directly off the battery should be fused as close to the battery as possible to prevent wiring melting or catching fire should you suffer a short circuit somewhere along the wiring or at the socket. Any item you plug into the 12v socket will have it's own fuse but this doesn't protect the wiring from the battery to the socket.

Out of interest do car gps units have a socket for external speakers that I could connect to my bikes intercom/helmit speakers.

The car one i'll be using doesnt.. but it has bluetooth, so im gunna connect it via that.

Sits quite nicely at a good angle in my tank bag, shall put the clear waterproof thing over it too. Test it out going down to London tomorrow night, good 100 mile odd run.

I wired in my car's tomtom XL.
I got a RAM holder £9.95 of some website
Found a website that sold a 12v to USB cable which I wire into the - terminal of the battery and the + cable on the rear brake light so it will only allow power to the satnav when the ignition is on, saves draining the battery by accidentally leaving it on Embarassed
