Well I bought a bike, a Yamaha ybr 125, which arrived today. I've never ridden before and have booked my cbt for a week on Sunday. Lovely looking bike that is slightly less good looking after dropping it twice already! Once when wheeling it towards the garage after only taking it off the hands of the yamaha guy, and the second time in the garage which has added a couple of lovely scratches..
It's much heavier than i expected which will take abit of time getting used to, maybe I should head back to the gym. Couldn't even manage to put it on the centre stand whilst he was showing me which was slightly embarrassing. Have pulled that maneuver off now though!
Have attemped to ride it up the (small) drive, trying to get used to the clutch and throttle. Think it will be slightly harder than I thought it would be. Takes me back to car lessons ten years ago with the trepidation of not having any real control over it. Got a fear that it's going to fall on top of me which I imagine would be pretty painful!
Anyway, I shall look forward to some hands on training from an expert and hopefully get abit more confident.
All the best to everybody
Jonny

Congratulations on your purchase. Thumbs Up

Try not to break it before you get a chance to ride it though. Wink

Grats on the bike.
I think you'll find it a lot easier and feel a lot more in control once you've done the CBT Smile

Congrats on the bike. As said before, it will get better with time. The act of putting the bike on the side stand is an artform in itself. Its all technique rather than strength and if I remember rightly they show you on the CBT.

At last, a chance to be helpful! Wink

Putting it on and off the centre-stand is one of the first things they show you on the CBT. Funnily enough it was a YBR that I did my CBT on last month and, once I got out on the road, I enjoyed flying around on it so congrats on picking a good first bike! Thumbs Up

I think you've picked the one thing that I found really tough, the clutch. But I suspect your car experience will have you mastering it in no time, like everyone has kindly told me just relax and it will come to you.

Most of all, just enjoy it. For all my difficulties from never having been in charge of a powered vehicle before I finished the day with my face aching from grinning so much! Good luck.

Ha ha ha - welcome.

You will be surprised how quickly your really heavy bike becomes this little toy you throw around, and can easily pick up after a drop, or get onto the centre stand. You don't need muscles...not at all. You need experience.

For example, take me...skinny, 56kg (8.5 stone) 5ft 8" tall...been riding for oodles of years, just sold my 650cc naked motorbike, done a lot of miles, up and down the motorway, and I don't do the gym.
It doesn't take muscles to ride. That's for sure. Cool

+1!Very Happy as you dropped it once, now you'll be less afraid to ride it maybe...
Taking it seriously,I also think it's the matter of time only-the more you ride the better you can do it.

Hi and congrats on your bike (great bike but I'm biased Laughing).

It took forever for me to work out how to put mine on its centre stand and get used to the weight and now it takes no effort at all and I'm a short female Smile Although I do tend to use the side stand more when out and about.

Mine's also scratched up but that was more where I tried to get it in and out of my front gate in the first few months than anything else and yes I've dropped it on me 2x Embarassed and been knocked off 1x.

As long as you're not going at more than 5mph and you come a cropper then you shouldn't get too hurt if it falls on you not if your kitted up, just bruised ego and body. Just try and relax (you'll hear that often) and keep practising.

Safe riding.

I've been going up and down the road on it today a few times so I'm starting to get used to the clutch and changing gears. Feel like abit of a tit tho goin so slow and probably looking so uncomfortable! Hopefully stand me in good stead though for the cbt. The couple of scratches are abit annoying, no idea how to remove them maybe i'll put a yamaha sticker over them Wink
Can get it on the centre stand reasonably easily, just have to make sure i dont pussyfoot about with it or its hard to budge.
Just a case of practise now I reckon. Cheers for the comments and advice Thumbs Up

Yup. Practice wheeling it around. It is a heavy machine, in comparison to anything else you'll have manhandled.

The biggest thing is, initially, NEVER tilt the bike away from you, theres no catching it then. Whilst you're getting used to it, the trick is to keep the bike leaning into you at all times, that way you can use your body weight to handle it.
