Yeah I don't particularly think it was clever riding without a front brake if I'm honest man.
But if you want my 2 cents, it does indeed sound like valve clearances. My CG did this a lot when I bought it, but since it's still not roadworthy, I've had it apart and practically rebuilt it.
The only thing I missed was the valve clearances and it made pretty much the same noise you describe. Once I sorted the clearances out, it was fine.
0.038 inches is what your clearances need to be set at if I remember correctly. But go to this site and click on servicing, there is a good guide to sorting your valve clearances out on there.

Think slam hit the nail on the head, but riding without a front break is abit of a dumb thing to be doing, as you could avoiding the vehicle and maintained control no doubt about it..
