Paying kwik fit type places for oil and filter change

Its fairly cheap to get a kwik fit type place to do an oil and filter change on my Xsara VTS, but how likely is that they will actually do it?

Its about £25 with national tyres and autocare which is probably cheaper than buying the oil and filter and doing it myself.

Just worried that they will fail to do the work or knacker it up somehow as most of these places have a bad rep?

It is cheaper than buying the oil and filter yourself in a lot of cases unfortunately.

For example Honda will do an oil and filter change with castrol for less than I can buy the castrol oil for on its own.

Should be pretty obvious if they have done it, the oil will be transparent on the dipstick straight after a change.

Whether or not they use the oil they say they will is what would worry me.

If you don't buy branded oil, there is no way a garage can beat the cost of doing it yourself.

They may just wipe the filter casing clean rather than change it. Most numpties wouldn't know what an oil filter looks like anyway. If the filter is internal, as it is on quite a few modern cars now, like the Mondeo, then they can get away without changing it quite easily.

I guess I could ask to watch them do the change, that way I could check they are using decent oil? and etch something into the oil filter.

I tihnk the oil filter is accessible via the engine bay on the VTS so I should be able to check that easily.

Surely you'll want the sense of achievement and piece of mind doing it yourself?

Best idea is to book an appointment and say that you'll be waiting while they do it, only a 15 minute job and you can watch.

If you genuinely don't trust these type of places (as I don't). Then why not do it yourself?

Oil filter should be a couple of quid max using google, and can probably find a suitable decent quality 5L of oil for £10.

wikinsons sell about 5L 10W/40 for a tenner
or if you have a costco card they do castrol oil dual 4/5L packs for about £22

I'd never let anyone change my oil.
No one except myself drives, let alone works on my car! I don't even like letting the MOT tester take it round the block for the brake test.

I'd definitely check that they actually do the job.
I had my tracking supposedly adjusted at one of the big tyre and exhaust places and they hadn't even touched it.

My friend works for a service center type place but it wasn't open on Sunday so I took it to Kwik-shaft as it was the only day I was free.

My friend said that I could bring it to him for the re-check if I wanted as it was closer.
The adjusters were seized solid, it took us about half an hour with a blow touch, wd40 and a hammer to free them off. Quick shaft had completely scammed me (well rather the spotty kid who worked there had).

the trained monkeys at kwikfit changed a set of pads on my dads car once

they put the caliper back together with some sort of air tool and managed to round off the hex patten in all the allen key bolts in every caliper
