bought myself an arc welder

the only problem is it needs a 30amp spar to run off, anyone know of any household sockets or am i going to have something installed?

i got one aswell and stuck a normal house plug on it,will get round to using eventually,wish my mum would stfu about it blowing the whole electric system in the house

Same here and the same question has occurred to me.

Taking a feed from the circuit that supplies an electric oven would be meaty enough, but welding in the kitchen may not go down well with any significant others you may share the house with.

I'm hoping the massive armoured cable running to my garage is on a 30amp spur. There's an electrician at the end of the cul-de-sac so I may get his opinion before I set fire to the junction box.

Having said that, I've got an electric cooker socket in the kitchen, and a bit of googling says they tend to be rated at 30amps.

There's a similar setup available from Screwfix at the moment (but ~£100), which is actually suppied with a 13 amp plug.

Having said that, I'm sure we have the 30amp connection that would normally feed an electric cooker (which we've never used)

... in fact I'm quite tempted to get a MIG rather than an arc welder - but possibly hire one first to try them out

What size welder is it?

Most hobby welders will pull 15A max, the smaller ones can happily run off a 13A plug. Worst that will happen is that you will blow the fuse in the plug.

Must be a big welder to need 30 amps.

May main plans for justifying getting a MIG welder is that I'm in the process of replacing the swiss cheese allen bolts on the Bandit, and already rounded a number of them (so it'll be much easier to replace them when I can weld a hex nut to the tops of them).

I also have plans to deal with another known problem on the Bandit, by replacing the corroded part of the exhaust collector box...
it's 3 or 4 days and ~£70 plus postage to get Banditmania or LMSpares to do it
or ~£160-£200 for a new set of downpipes

or ~£100 plus accessories, and a BIIIG sense of achievement to do it myself
