Honda XR400.
Everywhere I look they don't stipulate weather or not they are road legal or not.

What do you want to use it for?

'Knobbly' covers a wide range of tyres.

Why do you want it to be road legal, too?
(Ie for MOT, because you're a stickler to road legality, event conditions, etc?)

Oh and I wouldn't get too het-up on having exactly the right size.
Ie, I've had 140 to 100 width dirt tyres on the same rim and been fine.

I Like the nobbly's and they have to be road legal because I use my bike on the road.

I am looking for a road legal 120/100-18 or better still 130 or 140/100-18. The wider the better.

Cheers!

You need to answer this question before you can get a useful answer.
Is it just for road use? Or do you want to be using it off-road and if so, what kind of off-road use?

Why do you want a wider tyre?

Do you want a wide knobbly tyre just for looks Confused.

The problem here is that, frankly, it's a rather silly choice I'm afraid.
You're choosing a tyre that doesn't work well on the road and works less well in most winter conditions.
When it's just for road use, the wider tyre will probably make it handle even worse on the road - off road things work rather differently.
The tyre will wear out quicker to some degree - though not wear out of legal tread, just become even worse as far as grip and feel goes.

However, still, I suggest you try a Pireili mt21.
They have the 'knobbly' look you are after, but are just about acceptable road tyres. I've done plenty of road work on them, but only generally because either I was riding too or from off-road, or for a short trip because it wasn't worth swapping tyres/wheels and I wanted to pop to the shops.
If the bike is designed for a 110, it may be quite a distortion to get a 140 on; as I say, for road use this is more of an issue.

Personally, I'd suggest not being a tart and get some proper road tyres in the proper sizes for road use Wink.

Are you sure you have enough room at the front of the swingarm? a 110/100-18 is 110mm high(nominal) a 140/100-18 is 30mm taller and might rip off the plastic shockguard thing bear in mind the tyre increases in diameter at speed.

G is right a wider tyre will not produce any more grip on the road (maybe less as it is a larger diameter the chord will be less )

Off road it depends what your riding on.

Good point above, I would get away with a 120/100-18, I saw one the other day. It looked much wider than mine. So I guess the 130's and 140's may be too wide.

I normally get my Mitas tyres through Leisuretrail. Google should see you right.
