Hi all,

I'm 22 years of age and recently passed my car licence (about 3 months back). Since then I have racked up 4,500 miles in a 1.2 Seat Ibiza (53 plate). Now being honest the Seat is a fantastic car and is great as a little run around. My problem is A) my last bike was a 1050 Speed Triple with gobs of power and B) I mostly drive on motorways.

I’ve been looking for something with a bit more go that I can actually afford to insure and much to my amazement Hyundai Coupes are very cheap to insure. I currently pay £103 a month for the Seat (Mad I know). The Hyundai comes out at a smidge over £120! Not bad considering a 1.8 tdi old shape focus was just over £150! In fact most cars I’ve looked at around 1.8/1.9 tdi mark have all come out at £150 a month. Bear in mind the Hyundai quote is for the 2ltr petrol not the 1.6! I really like them (the ones from 2002 on) and are a lot of car for the money (full leather, 140bhp etc). I could sell my Seat and buy the Hyundai only having to put a few hundred quid towards it (if any at all). Does anyone have any experience of them?

Remember to factor in the running costs between a 1.2 Ibiza and a 2.0 Coupe, it could work out more pricy than it first appears.

Ime they are like rovers, it looks like you get a lot of car for the money. But there's a reason they are so cheap. I was going to get one but after looking at a few i decided against it.

Overall not a bad car but let down by poor build quality.

Check it all over for rust, especially the floorpan if it has a sunroof because it will probably leak. Don't pay too much for one. There are loads about and they are slow sellers.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'm not expecting them to be amazing just a little more fun than what I currently have. I fully expect it to use more fuel but I don't think it is going to double my bill, the 1.2 isn't that great on the motorway due to it reving its nads off sitting at 80.

Thanks for the advice on rust, I'll make sure to look out for this. As you have mentioned, there are quite a few out there, I'll take my time and chose well, I'm sure I can get one sub 80k miles sub 2000 quid in decent nick it's just a case of avoiding impulse buys Shocked

I'll keep looking and reading the reviews.

My work friend has a 5 door 99 accent, he treats it so badly and drives it like he stole it every day on a 40 mile round trip commute for the last two years. The thing is an utter shed but still it soldiers on!!

I was so impressed by the fact it was still going that I started to look for one myself until a free polo ended up in my lap.

Try quotes on an older audi a4 or something..

I insured an Astra 1.4 first year.. £154.45 a month Laughing

Rover 75 1.8T the next year £800 a year
Now im in a supra for £1500 a year...only got it as I feel up to driving a faster car and I have had 2 years experience of making petrol last as long as is physically possible Laughing

Remember things like.. tyres, brakes etc.

Tyres on supra are £195 a corner...MINIMUM.
Bought 4 for the Rover for £240 fitted.

I think they're an ok car if you can get a decent mileage one.
Although, dont underestimate fuel costs of a 2 litre petrol.
If it helps... Fuel costs alone could look like this:

1.2 Ibiza -
Stated Combined MPG = 47
Fuel price of 1.15 (5.228 per gallon)
Cost per mile is 5.228/47 = £0.11
On you mileage thats (4500/3) £165 a month / £1980 a year

Hyundai Coupe 2.0 -
Stated Combined MPG = 35
Fuel price of 1.15 (5.228 per gallon)
Cost per mile is 5.228/35 = £0.15
On you mileage thats (4500/3)x0.15 = £225 a month / £2700 a year

Or if you have 'fun' in it, bearing in mind the stated urban fuel consumption is 25 you'd soon be seeing average 20 sooo...
'Fun' Combined MPG = 20
Fuel price of 1.15 (5.228 per gallon)
Cost per mile is 5.228/20 = £0.26
On you mileage thats (4500/3)x0.26 = £390 a month / £4680 a year

Sorry if thats the most boring info ever but fuel usage can cost a fortune. scary stuff Very Happy

I doubt you'd get down to 20mpg, my old Xsara VTS averaged 30 even when pushing it and that had 167bhp.

In fact, that would be a better choice as it's way faster and handles much better although insurance might be steep. They're dirt cheap as they have naff image but they're basically a 306 gti6.

Only a suitable choice if you value the driving experience over the appearance...

Hyundais. There's a reason they were sold with a 10 year warranty in the States.

Good, solid motoring. It won't blow your socks off but it will be a nice place to sit and do your commute.

fair enough, I was just pointing out the fuel cost hike could be significant.
I just got a 1.8 audi last week, I'm averaging 37mpg on the first tank of fuel. Thats 350 miles at average 60mph the rest average about 30mph

Cant really offer much advice on the coupe's - i've looked into getting one a few times, seem to be decent enough cars if you find one that's not on a par with the starship enterprise mileage wise. Personally i think they look quite good too.

My Mate has the 2.7 V6 version, it is a great looking car and the interior is nice. It drinks petrol like no tomorrow, and is quite stiff and low, but it is fast and looks even faster. He has had his for nearly 2 years I think, and he hasn't had any major problems.

I think it would make a lot less sense with that engine to be honest. If you are going to put up with running costs like that I'd want something a hell of a lot faster (that is a terrible specific output) and probably rwd. As a budget car that looks nice and sporty it's perfect but as an actual sports car I'm not convinced.
