I've noticed that there have been a lot of very verbose postings appearing on the forum lately, often consisting in part or in whole of information found elsewhere on the internet and pasted en block complete with partially or not at all relevant links.

Fair enough and information is a good thing.

But a personal plea, could members please exercise caution with what they post in the workshop section. Googling a subject and posting what you find really isn't appropriate, there is a lot of crap out there on the internet. You are giving real people, real advice on a complex, powerful and potentially dangerous machine which they will be using. Wrong advice could cause expensive damage, injury or death.

If you don't actually have any direct personal knowledge or experience about the exact subject you are posting about, please consider either not posting (my preference) or at a minimum qualify your remarks by making it clear you found the information on google/wikipaedia/whatever or that the advice is general rather than specific to that persons situation.

I'm not naming names, there are a few culprits and I'm sure they know who they are. It strikes me that there may be issues with ADHD or low-end Aspbergers spectrum and I know people affected by these conditions are often poor at picking up on subtle hints which is why I'm being direct and forthright.

I'm not trying to start a flame-war but if you find you are incapable of managing to keep unqualified/irrelevant/wrong drivel out of the workshop section, I will start making a lot more use of the karma system than I currently do which, if others do likewise, can result in it being difficult to post or eventually a ban. I usually prefer to challenge someone directly in the thread if I think what they are saying is incorrect.

Remember, you are messing with real peoples physical safety here.

Your doctor's most important tool for diagnosing the cause of your diarrhoea is the information you provide. You will need to inform the doctor about recent travel and whether other people in your family are ill. Providing details about the stools may be embarrassing to you, but they are very important, such as presence of blood or mucus; how watery it is; how long you've had diarrhoea; whether you are also experiencing severe urgency, abdominal pain, or pain in your rectum; and whether it occurs more often after eating certain foods.

Your doctor may want to examine a sample of your stools and may send it to a laboratory for testing. If your doctor suspects food intolerance, the doctor may ask you to avoid a particular type of food for a while to see if this helps stop your diarrhoea. If your doctor needs more information to make a diagnosis, you may need to undergo sigmoidoscopy, which is an examination of the rectum and lower part of the colon with a lighted tube-like instrument, or colonoscopy, which is an examination of the entire colon with a similar instrument. If your symptoms suggest food intolerance or a hormonal disturbance, other tests may be ordered.

What are the treatments?
The most important aspect of treating diarrhoea involves avoiding dehydration. Because plain water does not contain sugar, sodium, or potassium, which are also lost in diarrhoea, it is important to consume plenty of fluids that contain these substances. Examples of such drinks include water, diluted fruit juices, prepared re-hydration solutions, and chicken or beef soup. Sugary and milky drinks should be avoided as they may prolong the diarrhoea or make it worse.

If you also are vomiting, try taking tiny amounts of liquid every 15 minutes. After you are able to hold down liquids, you can advance to a bland, soft diet.

Children are often put on a simple diet of bananas, rice, pureed fruit, and toast.

You may be asked to avoid fats, sweets, coffee, and milk products until you are completely over the diarrhoea.

The NHS says anti-diarrhoea medicines can be useful to relieve symptoms and reduce discomfort, but should not be used where there is blood in the stools or a high temperature. Pharmacists can advise on suitable products, but these medicines should not be given to children.

In severe diarrhoea due to infectious bacteria, your doctor may advise taking antibiotics to help resolve the symptoms. However, antibiotics won't help with viral diarrhoea, which is the most common type of infectious diarrhoea.

My doctor diagnoses most things by putting a probe up my anus. I have never seen it but he must keep it in a special bag as I can hear him unzip it before he slides it in.

Can't see it working personally, I figured there was probably a similar reason behind the postings after encountering them the other day. Unless a personal email is sent from a moderator directly to the person(s) in question I can't see this post doing anything but bouncing off the target.

I blame the karma system.

Karma may not be the root of all evil, but the pursuit of karma may be.

I rarely go into workshop, but even I have noticed a few half baked notions being taken as gospel by the original poster, who is unable to distinguish between truth and fiction.

Does BCF have the facility to ban particular members from posting in workshop ?

Probably not, but a personal title along the lines of "spouts bullshit from google" would probably be a pretty good hint Laughing

This I believe to be the crux of the matter, I have noticed that a lot of newer members seem to have gold blobs within a month or so of being on the site, and can only assume this from basically spamming The Workshop or New Bikers area.

Karma is earned from useful/helpful postings etc and shouldn't be a "competition" of who can a gold blob or multiblobbing just because they posted in a certain area.

Seen a few of the newer members who blobbed up on gold posting crap, where as you get people like Kickstart who posts correct info all the time and always helps so actually deserves to be on the blobs.

Perhaps a new karma system introduced for new members where they don't earn karma for the first few months of membership and can only give karma in The Workshop, would stop the tidal wave of googled poopy on the board.

Disinformation has always been around the forum but not in such vast quantities as that which has appeared over the last week. As it is the same poster it may appear to someone uninformed that they actually know what they're talking about and are capable of responding to numerous problems, however most people who have some clue already point out the pointlessness of the guy's posts. He certainly isn't chasing karma, don't think his issues are quite so trivial.

Of course there may be several culprits but up until the last week I hadn't seen any real problems in the workshop section or any other one bar the very occasional nonsense post.

If people see bad info in the workshop, then they MUST down-rate the post (confusing or redundant would seem appropriate).

I don't think anyone's got enough karma points to be able to keep track of Esoteric1's posts.

Good point, but to the best of my knowledge, no-one has ever asked for advice on how to strip a thread properly, get brake fluid into their boots or the correct way to use a Ducati's spring-loaded sidestand to drop their bike on its side.

Maybe there should be a karma category for dangerous or bad info, confusing doesnt really cut it. "I know exactly what you mean but are you off your head?" sorta thing

The problem with that is that it can get rather misused as people's opinions on what's right and not can reasonably vary massively.

P.S, I will calm it down a bit.
So if you have no specific knowledge to answer a question but you find some using google, what's wrong with that?
EG: I didn't know the answer to this but I found the answer using google, and Ebay sellers. https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=207282

Old Thread Alert!

The last post was made 16 years, 3 days ago. Instead of replying here, would creating a new thread be more useful?
