How easy are they to make?

The way I see it the only really tricky bit is the cleaning and lacquering of the block itsself.

I may have someone that can get me a Jaguar V12 block pretty cheaply so I'm sorely tempted.

Anyone know how you'd need to clean it, and what the best way to lacquer it?

I'm thinking acid dipped, then a car body shop to lacquer?

Fixing the glass to it could be done through the bolt holes that sit in the middle of the V.

90% sure the block's aluminium, if that makes a difference.

legs, (made from conrods?)

and a glass top, with little rubber rectangles stuck on, where the 4 tips of the pistons meet the glass.

i'd do it tomorrow if i had the money.

How much for sandblast & powder coating ball park?

I'd be surprised if con rods were strong enough to support the weight of the block?

Also seems mad to mess about welding a peg into the barrels when you can just drill the glass and screw through it like this:

Pedant. Wink

Typically people tend to use V8s for coffee tables, I guess since they're more plentiful, and Top Gear made them famous.

Would you prefer those Engine Block tables? Razz

only reason i said that, is that you will find the casting has quite alot of imperfections on non machined areas, and might look a bit crap if just lacquered.

Hmm, however the machined bits & gasket faces will look crap if powder coated. So you'd need to mask those off when it's coated and then if it's aluminium leave them, if it's iron lacquer them. Thinking

Just mailed a local place that does shot blasting, and powder coating, so we'll see what they say.

Sheet of glass and grinding paste, will clean the faces up perfectly. It's unlikely to rust even if it's iron, good chance it won't get wet and there probably won't be a huge amount of damp in the house.

The conrods will easily hold a block.

You could bond the glass to the table or use suckers secured by holes drilled in the block/pistons?

Vapour blasting will get the best look - takes it back to plain, clean alloy. Will look better than new and far better than powder coating.

Not too cheap though. I had my CB250RS engine vapour blasted (7 different pieces in total) and it cost about £150.

To save yourself come cost, a pressure washer will take off an awful lot of crap. Coat it in strong household cleaner (cillit bang or similar) and let that work in first.

Thinking.

Interesting.

For a shot blast and powder coat it's £150 at the place near me.

To get something that size powder coated would be about £40-50.

I thought about doing this, the main drawback was the weight. Those thing weigh an absolute ton.

But then F1 wheels can be picked up for about £50 including postage, I'd be far more likely to make one out of one of those.

Ah, seem to be slightly more expensive now, but still only £80 inc postage.

There were loads when I last looked, eBay was almost flooded with them.

There's still plenty all in the same ballpark.

The block alone's about 50kg IIRC.
