If turning left, get right over to the left. Exception when a few cars back stay in the middle of your lane.
If turning right, get right over to the right same exception as above
If at a roundabout do the same.
Only difference is when there are marked lanes then you stay in the centre of your marked lane.
For demonstration purposes my instructor would ride up my right hand side if I cocked it up and flick the killswitch, he'd also ride up my left side and give me a shove if I left a gap big enough for him. Scared the shit out of me and I called him a twat but it got the point across.
when not on test, protect your lane space and use your head. I leave a slightly bigger gap when turning left as i dislike being side swiped by lorries ____________________ 2008 VFR800 VTEC |

Well i failled my part 2 1st time round for being in a central position, the tester then told me afterwards that if turning right you should leave no space for another car to squeeze past on your right same for turning left make sure no one can get in beside you on the left.
Next time i was all right across to the left and right and passed |

I have a couple of questions aswel
What if, there are two dedicated lanes to turn right, you are in the left lane, what position should you be in that lane?
Also, thought of this one when It happened to me today. What if, you are turning right at the lights, you are positioned on the right of the lane, when the lights turn green and you start moving, a car comes and squeezes past on the left, what do you do, just keep riding like normal?
Also, I made some position mistakes while on a dreaded roundabout in my town, It's a single lane, and I wish to go straight on, I presume you be in the left position whereas I was in the middle. What if, The examiner went into that space which was left to the left of me, even if i looked and double checked before starting and knew he was there- you would fail right? ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

i was under instruction to always maintain centre of lane until you are making a turn against the flow of your lane i.e. turning off into a left get over to the left but not too far. break the road into halves and get in the middle of the left half. for turning right same applies but on the right.
when just following a trafic light flow for one or more lanes in a certain direction where no actual 'turn' is made then just maintain central position.
it sounds a bit harsh that he failed you on positioning like that aslong as you were in your lines and not waggling about. a dangerous fault for me would be straying over the white lines or allowing traffic to move past you in lane.
dont worry too much fella just use your noggin and relax you will be fine. the examiner is nothing more then a glorified satnav just relax and ride your own ride. if he gets stuck at lights sod him he will have to catch up, he may ask you to pull over though but dont slow down or worry about him before he gives an instruction. keep an eyes on those speed limit changes and you will be fine ____________________

If you're turning right - Its a marked lane in both cases. Maintain centre position in both.
If you can go straight on or left in the left lane (cross roads)...
Turning left - Get left.
Going straight - Stay in the middle.
If its only a T junction, 2 lanes going right, 1 lane going left. Its a marked lane (implied if no markings are in the left lane but every other lane is marked) in either direction so maintain position in the middle.

I'd toot my horn to allow the car driver to know I'm there as obviously he hasn't seen me. I would also give way to him as he's being an arse and sadly motorbikes don't offer much in the way of resistance to a 1.5 tonne vehicle.

Straight on = middle but around the outside of the roundabout, do not cut across.
Left = Left
Right = Right. ____________________ 2008 VFR800 VTEC |

Only problem is that it's based on the NI tests which seem to require different manouvers to us.
I certainly noticed a difference between his instruction and what my instructor was saying. Things like the lifesavers and ordering. ____________________ 2008 VFR800 VTEC |

On a 1 way street you're expected to treat the entire road as a single lane unless otherwise indicated.
So yep. move to the "wrong side of the road" if turning right not just the middle if there are no markings. ____________________ 2008 VFR800 VTEC |

I've had a car licence for 2 years now. And I haven't come into any bad habbits. I always do what I was taught to do when driving. As my grandfather said- people often want to pass the test, and not to learn to drive. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

If you are not learning anything from your instructor, it's time you started asking some questions!!! This is what he/she is there for - for you to learn. If you're not learning, ask for help.
There is little point paying the money and getting no help whatsoever. Heck, my instructor showed me how to do endo's...he was a pretty cool bloke. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

The rule is easy.
The gap you leave between you and the kerb/opposite lane shouldn't be wider than a pushbike.
Mirror, lifesaver, position/signal, lifesaver, turn, check speed limit, cancel signal, position.
Real life situation: signal, position to the opposite side, start feeding the throttle, tilt the bike as much as you can (your balls let you), turn, slow down to 10 while checking the tits on the right, cancel signal, check her bum from the right mirror, sigh, open the throttle. ____________________ Boris - London |
