1 question on the type of bike, the other 5 on the oil you use.

Forgive me, but what does the type of oil have to do with Sports Psychology?

Or is this really a marketing question and you work for an company that sells oil? Rolling Eyes

My theory is around whether bike riders see the bike merely as a piece of apparatus that facilitates their hobby or whether it is a 'partner in crime', i.e. something that is part of the hobby and therefore looked after. I'm interested to know whether the riders know about their bike or merely take it to a mechanic who fixes it for them.
Thanks,
R

My bikes are not sports bikes.

I use 10-40 silkolene engine oil in my bikes.

I change the oil myself.

I don't know if different oil affects the engine as I only use silkolene.

The oil reaches where it needs too.

I understand nothing of the three zone technology.

What do you know of the three states of water? Wink

First off, you are probably just a spammer who will be selling us oil in a few posts but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt:

Roxy2010 wrote:

What oil do you use in your current bike? (Type and Brand if known)

Honda CBR600F F1

Do you change your oil yourself or does someone do it or you?

I do all servicing myself

Do you think the type/quality of oil affects overall bike performance? If so, what elements of its performance?

No

Which parts of your bike does the engine oil reach?

Top end, bottom end, gearbox, clutch - You want a FULL list??

What do you understand by three zone technology?

It's some marketting bollox about how one brand of oil is ok for the engine, clutch and gearbox - aimed at making morons think that other brands without this 'techonology' are inferior.

Many thanks in advance,
Roxy

No, I just change it more regularly.

Pretty much everything on the inside. Top and bottom end. I am an engineer and not going into details.

I assume you work for an oil company and this is some branded technology I haven't heard of.

I'm studying a Sport Psychology MA and I'm looking for some riders to answer a few quick questions.

Basically, I'd like to speak to some 'experiencers', i.e. riders with a performance sportsbike who see riding as a hobby, even if they do commute on it as well. The bike is important to them as a way of getting their speed/riding ‘kick’. They are adventurous spirits – going for a 2 hour ride on a Sunday afternoon is something that they love – it’s not a chore.

If you think this is you, and are willing to give up 10 minutes of your time to help, I'd be very grateful! Smile

I can give you the answer to that.

Biking is a hobby and not a method of transport for most. Therefore, people who do not at least take an interest in the functioning of their machine are rare. Most people who I know who ride bikes do at least basic maintenance on them.

I've owned many bikes in the last 5 years, TT600, FireBlade, TZR250, RGV250, RD350x3, 2x Buell XBs, VFR400. I currently own a Buell XB12S and an RD350 YPVS, along with an MZ ETZ301.

I change the oil myself on all of my bikes, and in the Buell I use Harley Davidson 20w40 semi synth. I used to use Harley mineral oil but they stopped making it.

The type and quality of oil definitely effects the health of the engine, but not performance directly. I reckon if I loaded my bike up with chip fat it would perform well for at least a few minutes/hours before going pop. Maybe the gearshift would be stiffer, but apart from that its about longevity rather than performance.

My bike is an air/oil cooled Harley based V twin, and so the engine oil lubricates the top end, the pushrods, the bottom end and flows through the oil cooler back to the oil pump. The transmission oil lubricates the gearbox and the primary drive chain.

I've no idea about three zone technology, but I have a strong suspicion that someone doing an MA in psychology would not ask what it is. Its far too specific to be getting a psychological result from the answer. I'm also not sure how Sports science relates to people going for a sunday afternoon ride... surely you should be speaking to club racers?

I think you're going to fail your MA for not studying an area related to Sports Science. Sounds like an undergraduate engineering essay to me.

In that case, yes, my bike is my hobby, I've been riding 18 years now and do all work on my bikes myself. I build engines for fun/a hobby. I know my bike(s) inside out.

I wouldn't trust a main dealer on any bike I have had, or will have in the future as they are all geared towards profit and getting work done as quickly as possible and getting it out of the door and money in.

I'm not going to answer you oil questions as I dont feel that is of any relavence.

Thumbs Up

-Mobil 1 racing 10/40 synthetic oil

-Myself obviously?!!

-10/40 oil is 10/40 oil so not realy performance wise, its only if you put completely the wrong oil in, ie fourstroke, or extremely thick viscocity etc.....
-Transmission/clutch/pistons/internal engine components etc....

- Three Zone technology or '3ZT' is an interactive and challenging process to create a new culture for working together and deliver a new agenda of business improvement projects. It involves large groups of employees from every level in the organisation.

(basically its a Business idea/vision to promote a better work place ie envoling all levels of the employment tree, theres plenty of ideas like it id imagine in alot of large companys etc...)

So that's what it is. Sounds like HR department rubbish, but then maybe I am cynical having suffered all sorts of these things over the years. Might be fine in theory but in practice they just provide yet another way for the rubbish managers to screw things up and prevent the good mangers from doing their jobs.

All the best

*2001 honda cbr600fs-1 (sports bike), 2003 kawasaki zx6r b1h (sports bike), 93' cb250N and now a 99' kawasaki zx7r (sports bike).

*Oil, either castrol if im feeling like I want to spunk money up the wall, or as i do now is 10w/40 semi synthetic Hein gericke oil/filter combo for £20, apparently its relabelled motul oil.

*change it myself

*I dont believe expensive oils will make any noticable difference to my bike that "I" could notice performance wise. Regular changes will have a far better improvment to wear rates etc than expensive oil not changed so often

*Engine oil reaches pretty much everything, from the cams all the way down to the clutch

*not aware of what 3 zone technology refers too

To start with, define a 'Sports-Bike'.... & nail down your demographic a bit better.

Plenty of people wear running shoes.... not many of them ever run more than for a bus in them....

The defanition of a modern 'sports-bikes' as a genre, generally is a road-going motorcycle with styling and featurs aping non-road-going road-race machines. Most, are used solely on the road, but many get kept purely as track-day bikes for non-competative riding around closed circuits, or actualy club competition road-racing.

But, the term 'sports-bike' could also be applied by some-one without specialist knowledge to describe a Trail-Bike, Enduro-Bike, Super-Moto or pure Trials bike, intended for use & often competition on unsurfaced roads or courses.
Again, most road-going trail-bikes rarely see mud under thier tyres, and they tend to be road-machines with styling & features aping thier pure competition cousins, but many do get kept purely for sport or are used for leisure riding on the road, in non-competative events or actual competition.

Bikes themselves, range in size from the humble moped, of less than 50cc and limitd to around 35mph up to machines of perhaps 1.5l or more, and speeds in excess of 200mph.Then there is as MUCH diversity within the riders, and the way they percieve thier motorcycle and the way they use it.

As a post-grad, you dont seem to have started this survey off very well...... and certainly not in a very accademic manner.....

So, Hypothesis, you want to consider the psycology of motorcyclists and thier attitudes to thier motorcycle, particularly whether the machine is more than merely a 'tool' enabling thier hobby, or whether they have some 'emmotional investment' in the machine....

I'm not a Psycology Don.... but I do know that the very first thing that will be leveled against such a study is that it is shall we say.... 'unchallenging', and unlikely to tell us anything we dont already know.

OF COURSE motorcyclists make an emmotional investment in thier machines! Takes about five seconds for a five year old to figure that one out! Look at all the custom & classic shows, talk to ANY biker, or just watch what happens when one CRASHES on TV.... even a 'pro' rider will jump up, blood pouring from thier helmet, shoving the medics asside to see if the bikes OK!

What I presume you want to do, is look at a much more specific sub-sect of the entire motorcycling population, and focus in on the 'thrill seekers', whose interest in the persuit is not so diverse as the main-stream, the ones who get bikes purely for high-speed adrenaline kicks. (The ones that will go for a two hour leisure ride on a Sunny Sunday!)

They are a fairly obviouse sub-set; they tend to be low mile riders. They tend to change machines often, and are as likely to switch between sports, and dip in and out of biking, swapping thier bike for a jet-ski or quad, hang-glider or other high-adrenaline sports equipment... and they MAY be road riders, but Track-Day riders AND competition riders, in disciplines accross the board, fit that SAME profile.

Guess what? No prized for the conclusion that THEY tend NOT to make the emmotional investment in the machine as other bikers, and DO tend to look at the bike 'more' as a tool, fact that they so readily switch between actual machines and in and out of the persuit, demonstrates that pretty well.

So from the beginning, your not fairing well, the hypothesis is unchallenging, and does not provide any 'insight' that has not already been studied, better, and in more depth.

Significantly by marketing men, becouse selling a 'life-style' is a lot easier than selling a tool, and knowing who buys expensive accessories to personalise the machine they have a lot of emmotional investment in, and who will spend large amounts of money on having the latest or more impressive piece of sports equipment and will readily disguard an old one, is rather very important to them.......

This doesn't seem like a particularly credable study, and it CERTAINLY doesn't seem to be one of merit for Post-Grad Masters Thesis, and asking hotch-potch check box questions about oil? Come ON! Designing phyc profile questionaires is A-Level stuff.... and you've even done THAT badly!

Not answered your questions, but err.... my ten minutes worth of contribution for your consideration.

Teflon-Mike,
Erm, what can I say? Thank you for your... 'help'?
Whilst the questions I asked are only a tiny part of the overall project, all I was after was the answers. Some have been kind enough to participate, others have not, that's fine. But ultimately, I was just after the answers. Just the answers. That's all.
If I want help with my studies, I'll ask my tutor.
So just to clarify again, just answers would be great.
Thanks,
R
