Haven't been on in a while, hey everyone. Got beat off by a cager 3.5 years ago and got a healthy payout in the end. Was looking at allsorts of bikes including MVs, but ended up walking into a triumph dealership and taking a new Thunderbird out for a spin. Fell in love and ended up ordering one. They had a standard blue/white stripe coloured out the back but I wanted to spec it up so everything was fitted before PDI.

Bike has:
Headlight cowl
Hi flow Air filter
Hi flow shorty exhausts
1700cc big bore kit
Datatool alarm

Will get it dynoed after running in, but mods would put it at 100hp and 120lb/ft. Which is quite enough for the road I reckon.

Number of reasons.

1) Insurance. Ever tried to insure a 2.3 litre bike at the age of 22? Even with 6 years no claims, this bike, garaged, fully comp with the alarm and other security devices declared is costing me nearly a grand to insure.

2) This particular bike is actually worth considerably more than a Rocket 3.

3) This is a far nicer bike to ride than the rocket 3. Lighter, more nimble, better on fuel, and in my opinion, vastly more graceful than the awkward, lumbering Rocket.

4) Aesthetically, again in my opinion, the Thunderbird is a hell of a lot better looking than the Rocket 3. It can look a bit wierd in pictures but in the flesh it is stonking. As opposed to the Rocket, which looks wank in pictures, and wank in the flesh.

5) Despite having spent a while comparing the 2, the question is silly to begin with. If Triumph had thought the Thunderbird was going to steal sales from the Rocket then surely they wouldn't have released it. They are two totally different bikes aimed at two totally different demographics, the Thunderbird is aimed at stealing sales from Harley in the fat middleweight cruiser segment and the Rocket 3 is aimed at whoever wants a completely impractical huge bike for the sake of having completely impractical huge bike. I don't want a Rocket 3, so despite the fact I like the attitude and general demeanor of the new Roadster, I spent my money on what I consider to be a vastly superior bike.

Just my 2 cents. sorry to ramble.

Seen some jaws slackening as I take my helmet off recently. I'm not the balding, fat, mid life crisis middle ager people expect to see getting off that bike. I've had a lot of different bikes in my time, supermoto, enduro, naked, sports, streetfightered, cruiser is just another thing to tick off the list. And what a way to do it.

Probably a good time to point out that 50 goes into 1700 34 times. Boom.

Also point out that this is a brand new Triumph, not a Harley. Motor is water cooled, DOHC, parrallel twin with 4v per cylinder and fuel injection. Gearbox is 6sp and doesn't shift like it's reaching back in time to find another gear. Front brakes are dual 4 pot caliper Nissins with a brembo 2 pot on the rear, forks and shocks are Showa. And despite the enormous motor, has a shorter wheelbase and a sharper rake than the majority of cruisers. In other words it goes like shit off a shovel. Bike is very much at the sports end of the cruiser market, it would have to be for me to enjoy it.

Bore kit is cams, pistons, liners, clutch, remap and paired with the hi flow short exhausts and air cleaner moves the power higher up the rev range and emits a sound something akin to god being raped during a thunderstorm.

I'm thinking I like this bike. A lot.

Underpowered compared to what? Other cruisers? I'd like to point out the Thunderbird is not the only bike I own. I have other bikes for high speed kicks.

Nice that you have spent the payout on such a nice bike. I wouldnt take offence at comments about cruisers, this is in a different league to the average cruiser.

Nice bike. Personally I would lose that headlight cowl because IMO it takes away from the look of the bike. A nice bell lamp would look better there.
