Anyone got any ideas of any household items (or something cheap and readily available in a local supermarket) that i can use to waterproof my feet? My bike boots have developed gaping holes in the bottom and i need to go out delivering in the rain again later. It really doesn't need to be classy - just functional and cheap until i can go visit up north to get myself some Alt Bergs measured up.

Have tried bin bags previously, but found that my feet always end up wet-ish anyway, and it feels very cold the second i go out there - like the rain is coming straight through.

I'd be tempted to go for a bag over your socks and another (ideally tougher, ie rubble bag etc) over your entire boot, then gaffa taped on top and possibly further down too.

I put my foot in a carrier bag, then taped it to my leathers, I then put my boot on and folded the bag over and taped it to my boots.

If you haven't got on very well with the binbag quick fix, you could try the verucca socks that you can normally get at a sports shop/swimming pool - they are cheap (couple of quid) and will keep your toes dry.

Personally, purely for being comfortable, I'd splash out the extra few quid and get some neoprene socks. They'll set you back less than a tenner and can be used over and over again. Wear normal socks underneath and make sure they are not sticking out the top as they will wick water down otherwise - this keeps the neoprene ones fairly clean (unless you have honkingly cheesy feet obviously!!), so you won't need to wash every time just dry/air ready for next wear.

your feet are already waterproof, it's the boots and socks which have the problem. Take off boots and socks, stow in carrier bag, ride home and replace on feet...toasty Laughing

If its in the sole, then how about one of the sticky soles you can get. Might need to add some extra glue to ensure its stuck. Or Duck tape the boot.

This Thumbs Up

Or if you're feeling flush, get hold of some tarpauline, cut to shape, wrap around boot and gaffer tape in place.

Not too cheap but not too expensive either would be a pair of gortex type over socks (that's over your socks but inside the boot). You can get these from outdoor shops, maybe cheaper than motorcycle accessory places (but check). I use a pair in winter as not only do they keep water out they keep my feet warm as well. Get them now and you can still use them with your new boots.

Other than that I'd go with the plastic bag over the socks (socks soak up the sweat) with anothe pair of socks over the top to hold the plastic in place.

Smear your feet in vaseline. Then put your socks and boots on.

They won't be waterproof, but it'll be a funny thing to explain to the wife when she sees what you're doing.

Waterproof socks.

I paid 22 quid for them. You can get bike boots for 30 pounds.

Buy leather boots, which are sealed all the way around. Laced is ok so long as the tongue is stitched and not loose.

Then get some dubbin for £3

Smear it on once every 1-2 years.

Fully waterproof...

Different 'brands' of carier bag have different properties. Some are softer or more comfortable inside, some are crinkly and itchy, some have holes punched in them. [why do I even KNOW this shit?!?!?!?]
Carrierbags over the boots, rather than inside them can work better, but they soon rip.
Ultimately, decent boots are a must!
Cheap wellies are water-proof but offer zilch crash protection, so dont crash!
Cheap Derriboots are water-proof, but dont offer much crash protection, so still dont crash.
Cobblers can often fix old boots.
Ultimately needs must as the devil drives - make that trip up north!

Note you can get a variety of bike specific overboots (obviously less use to the OP when they posted), ie: https://www.mandp.co.uk/products/list/Clothing-and-Helmets/Waterproof-Overboots.

I found some quite useful looking bright yellow over boots that tread which I wanted to get for Glastonbury to wear on top of my army boots (as my wellies are terrible on stony stuff) - but the company, while it had a British division, had to get them from their US warehouse which would have taken too long.
Can't find the details, but reckon it'd have been good for bikes too.

You can get rubber overboots on ebay, might be that sort of thing.

However has everyone forgotten DUBBIN?

For example:

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DUBBIN-REJUVENATES-OLD-TIRED-LEATHER-TACK-SHOES-/370448491491?pt=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&hash=item56407363e3

It's been used to waterproof practically everything but specifically leather for 800 years??

Only trouble is it makes things smell when you first apply it, but they have other derivatives now such as Nikwax and other modern (less smelly) and probably less effective versions of the same thing.

Dubbin is the way forward, British army still use it!

Wellies aren't recommended unless you're on an automatic. Even if you can squeeze your welly-shod foot between footrest and gearchange lever, the actual process of moving your foot up and down is fun, to say the least. When I say fun, I mean you'll keep missing gearchanges and probably die horribly at some stage Wink
