125 Touring and tuning

OK, so ive done a good few tours, usually on 600cc or 1000cc sports bikes.

We realised that, most of the fun things from touring, have little to do with speed, and its mostly to do with having a laugh.

So the 2011 has been set and there are Rules

Its gotta be a 125 or under.

Cost under 400

So i also think this would be a good opportunity to learn and do a little engine fettling with little cost.

What kinda tuning can you do to a CG125 ? or other 125s, like polishing and porting perhaps ?

Or should i just go 2-stroke and get something like a Yamaga RXS ?

If if blows up, ill just throw the bike away and go pillion.

I hopefully wannna raise the pegs too, so i can kneedown, for extra laughs.

If you do this I may sell you my RXS if you want it, I swore I would never sell it but I haven't touched it in 4 years. It is in pretty good condition. 38000 miles. No tax or MOT, for MOT it will need new headstock bearings and maybe a rear tyre. I have a few spares, a full gasket set and rear break shoes. It will need abit of work to get it running, but nothing that will cost I don't think. Just the carb cleaning and the petrol tank and the 2stroke tank maybe. It had a new air filter and new gear box oil not long before I layed it up.

When I layed it up (when I bought the triumph) it ran perfectly and would hit 70mph with my lardy arse on it.

that was from my last tour.

Iv brought some panniers for it which will make loading and unloading a lot faster and easier.

not rode a rxs yet,but the cg is hella boring and vibrates like hell at 65

seen alot of rxs's go for around £300

You wont be able to pick a XR125 up for under £400, for touring l would get a CG125, YBR125 with the CB125t being my first choice if l can get a good one as there the most powerful of the coummter 125,s before the learner BHP limt was brough in.

Perhaps somewhere like Croatia

Trouble with the CG, is its almost too reliable, which would kinda take some of the fun and adventure away.

I think having a 2-stroke would be more of an adventure

Id be alot more relaxed then when i have a 6k bike between my legs.

I went on short camping trip on a YBR125 recently, just an over nighter, but the round trip was a respectable 280 miles. For luggage I used an old pair of Oxford '1st time' throwovers, a roll bag and and Aldi/Lidl tankbag. I usually do this sort of thing on a 600 with with luxury of hard panniers and topbox, but handling-wise the YBR took the weight well, still shifted pretty quickly (on the flat) and held 55mph without apparant strain.

If I had been camping for more than one night would have needed to take a bit more stuff but I don't think it would have been an issue. Enjoyed it so much I might do a couple of rallies/weekends on it next year.

get a chinese 125 - your desire for some mechanical work on the way is then bound to be satisfied.

actually that might not be a bad thing - might help on the perennial "are chinese bikes any good" subject...

Got a lovely c90 that would be on-budget ... but I think I'd try for an old CB125T, or a 2 stroke like an NS125 or similar.

I've got the embryo of a plan to arrange a tour involving buying a brand new 'Hero Honda' or similar bike in India and riding it back to the UK.
Top of the range 230cc or something bike comes in just over £1k (lower down a lot cheaper) I think and most of them get pretty good fuel economy, often based on standard engines and are a fair bit better than the Chinese unofficial copies I believe.

Don't get an RXS, get something with 12v electrics.

A MuZ RT125 would be a good bike for the job if you can find one, they fetch really stupid cheap money but are light years ahead of a cg125, worth a look if you can find one.
