is it sporadic or constant, could be a lot of things, slack wire dry solder joint moisture
any more info may narrow it down, I used to repair taxi radio's for a living
but without a bit more info its hard to narrow it down

press button or dial volume control ?? if button it could be sticking or shorting
if so a clean with an alcohol spray may solve it, if its a dial one that could be more tricky to pinpoint and more likely a fault in the amp or pre amp electronic's

try sitting still and see if it does it, if its Ok it could be a loose wire, dry joint
particularly on the power side as if the voltave swings it will cut off and have erratic volume or other wierd things happen
if it does it while stationary then its very hard to tell without seeing the unit and seeing whats happening
also look for that screen dimming or getting brighter, it could be part of the power loop about to fail
like a leaky capacitor or damaged diode

had a quick look on google, pretty newish so it will most likely be all integrated circuits
if it did it on another vehicle i'd have to say its an internal fault and very hard to track without opening it up
and getting a test meter in there to see whats going on
but as you mention its in a tractor (I'm assuming its a tractor not a lorry tractor)
I'd be inclined to think maybe dampness / condensation may have got in and is the culprate
can't really say much more without seeing it but open it up and check the fuse (theres normally one)
or look for any loose or oxidised connections or rust on the fuse holder etc

It's a dial one... if it's a big job it can get left. I'll convince the boss it's foobar and to buy a new one Laughing

if its a dial type its amost certainly an internal electrical issue
again not easy to track without getting a meter in there and checking it out
but most likely its at the amp stage, does it go up slow or jump quickly ??
