Hi guys,

I'm considering getting a device that can do Music and Navigation at the same time. I've been looking at recent phones like:

Google Phone Android
Samsung Galaxy
iPhone 4
HTC desire

But I was wondering which one of those has the best music player (Sound quality) and very good satnav functions. I've been researching but I'm sure one of you have already done this so some help would be really nice.

Thanks in advance

Baron

ye canny navigate using a phone man.....

Buy a Garmin Zumo. It comes with a good MP3 player that can read internal memory or from an SD card.
I have mine with a 2gb SD full of Andy Stewart and Callum Kennedy classics. Smile

The advantage of a phone as sat nav, is one less thing to carry and worry about. Its easily stored in your pocket, just using voice to guide you. Or if you really want a simple mount to hold it the same as your std sat nav.

Use a nokia X6 with no issues at all for both music 16 gig of storage and also sat nav.

Hello mate. Any Android phone will work nicely for you in my opinion. I have Google Maps with navigation on my Dell Streak and it is so much better than any purpose-made sat-nav I have ever used!

My favourite thing about it is the routes that you save on your computer on your Google account, you can have on your phone. This is really useful for planning routes or when you just want to ride a road that someone has told you about but don't want to spend all day finding it.

My sat-nav and media setup for the bike:

Dell Streak

JVC Bluetooth Headphones with music controls and call answering button thing

So Easy Rider for keeping it all dry, Streak only just fits in here!

You can pick up Android phones for as cheap as £60-£80 with Blue tooth, Music, and the maps on. I thought about doing that and getting one of the Virgin pay as you go Sims so I can do the unlimited Internet / sat-nav thing for £5 a month.

Don't buy android to go for satnav on the bike.

iphone, o2 xda, win mo phones, heck phones made in the stoneage all manage to route ALL audio through bluetooth devices (regardless of A2DP support or not). Android 2.1 on the streak... nope.

That rather snazzy jawbone you bought last year...worked fine with every phone you've had in the last 3 years, not with the dell streak.

Sign the code petition here: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=7906

I've resorted to using normal earbuds with the streak, which works fine but it is a faff.

In terms of satnav apps though, Co-Pilot has treated me well since version 5 on my Windows Mobile phone. Cracking piece of software.

Hmmm. My Dell Streak manages to route everything to the bluetooth headset OK and it's running 2.1.

Also the OP is looking for a solution that incorporates media as well, so i'm guessing stereo audio is a requirement so that issue won't come up.

This is a great idea.

I might be getting an iPhone with my job. Was wondering whether this app would work well on this phone?

I've known some GPS's to be really shit at guidance especially at speed and I mean the inbuilt ones in cars as well, I've also used an external Tom-tom which was really good imo.

I take it you need to be connected to the internet constantly for the app to work? Or does it work otherwise by tracking your mobile connection?

Is there an annual subscription? Can't really tell from the site.

And also about powering I take it an iPhone can only cope for a day right and if it's running an app how many hours?

Can you explain some more about how you power it? You put it in a mount or you power it from your backpack?

Last but not least can you have radio on your iphone as well as running your GPS?

The app in question is Co-Pilot Live. It contains the full download of maps that you buy. No internet connectivity required.

Only for: Traffic (not worth the £12.99) and some live services (requires the internet for live connectivity). Speed cameras are free.

Longest mines lasted on an iphone 3g was 4ish hours.

I don't believe the iphone comes with an FM radio (at least my 3G didnt), co-pilot does integrate with the music player (itunes in the iphones case) however.

Just how does it tell your positioning then? Surely it must communicate with a satellite or something like conventional Sat Navs do?

lol - srsly??

https://electronics.howstuffworks.com/gadgets/travel/gps.htm

Conventional Sat Nav is exactly what you have. All the necessary electronic parts in the back of your navman/tomtom/garmin have been integrated into the iphone. Smile

TL;DR: GPS signal does not equal the internets.

Yes but how does a phone communicate with a GPS satellite? Surely it's not the same connection as a conventional phone right?

Have you been using GPS on your phone? How good is it on the motorway at 70mph for example? Is it always accurate and as good as a Tom-Tom?

Nothing "communicates" with a GPS satellite as that implys two way communication.

The GPS satellites constantly transmit.

The phone simply receives these microwaves and uses the information to triangulate your position. Its exactly the same way any other GPS unit works.

There are additional bits (A-GPS for example) but essentially its the same thing.

Never had any problems with it on the following phones.

Co-Pilot 5 - (Cant remember the phone I had back then?!?)
Co-Pilot 6 - O2 Orbit
Co-Pilot 7 - O2 Orbit 2
Co-Pilot 8 - Iphone 3g
Co-Pilot 8 - Dell Streak

travelling at any speed.

How do you deal with the battery drying out too quickly.

I was wondering about the following.

I'd like to keep the iphone in my top left pocket.

I'd thus probably want to get a battery pack.

I'd want to also have a cover protecting the iphone from scratching..

Is this feasible or would you recommend having a 12v connector like you mentioned? Where does this mount is it from a battery pack or from the bike?

You can buy batteries that clip onto the back of the iphone. They make it massive but it's out there. There are loads of iphone accessories out there, have a google.

I would just use a 12v accessory socket wired to the bike, plug in an iphone charger, sorted.

Does the Copilot give voice directions as standard e.g. turn left in 100 metres?

Yes. It also has tts so can say: turn left onto alphabet street

It is a full satnav program which is a direct rival to tomtom, not a pos crappy free thing like nav4all.

Can you change the voice of the person speaking on the Sat Nav?

I'd either like a German disciplinarian General speaking english into my ear, or a well spoken stiff upper lip British military type talking into my ear.

Keeps you on your toes you see.

There is a free sat nav app on the iphone, I haven;t used it because I bought one for £6, but it works perfectly well playing music and with Navigation.

That may be so but..... Is /are phones water and vibration proof? Are the maps updated regularly? do they have speed camera warning?

The screens are too small to be of much use. Dedicated GPS Satellite navigation units have big screens with anti sun-glare coatings etc. And big glove friendly buttons. And the Zumo I use has Bluetooth coms too. And you can call your phone book straight off the screen or use directory service in the satnav.
And you woulf need to sort power and a secure 'cusion' mount. (Touratech equipment manufacturers have)

I wouldn't consider a phone as a satnav at the moment.
It's like using your phone as your main camera.
They are good for snapshots and a few projects but a 'decent' camera will always beat a phone.

Although... phones are damned convenient to have around when you're bloody lost, need to take a photo of where you are, want to listen to some cool toons (to calm your nerves) and call somefcuker to come and get you.
Canny see a satnav do all of that yet.
