Hi there, need to fix my Aprilia RX 50's running problems ASAP!! It's deresricted and will reach 50/55 mph, but I´ve been having trouble with it. It completely dies at about 40mph / when throttle is pulled back completely. Will only start again with choke and will only pull away with revs just below max. Took carb off - will give it a clean, but is there anything else obvious it could be before I re-assemble it and find out it´s still having the same problem? Electrics maybe? Would really appreciate some help please!!

I can't see a poorly adjusted clutch doing the symptoms listed. At speed a poorly adjusted clutch will only slip or not engage fully.

I imagine it is your throttle cable routing when you turn the bars it affects it.

is the air filter a 'pod' style filter?

Your power rave valve is more than likely fooked, and I can tell you that there is no stock of Aprilia power rave valves in the UK, you can get one from Italy, but they are all on holiday or something.

Identical problem to my RS125, and my RS125 has had
New bottom end
New top end
New carb
New air filter and service (standard filter)
In fact the only thing left to replace is the power rave valve, but just can't get hold a new one for love nor money, not buying a second hand one for near as dammit the same price as a new one.

K&N and new exhaust would have required up jetting the carb.

Your best bet is to get it to a garage and get it properly checked over, the short of it though, you aint going anywhere on it, it will become totally unrideable.

The reed valve does the same job as the rave valve does it not? If it does then the symptoms are identical to a failing rave valve.

Either way, I would get it to a garage to have a look at, the Aprilias are to finicky to mess about with unless you know what you are doing, easily mess that up and it can quickly cost you a lot of money

To me this sounds like a fuel flow issue, your Carburettor float chamber may be running out at you approach higher revs, check the manual for float height; set the float height as well as blowing out the NEEDLE VALVE, give fuel lines a good blow out too.
If this fails it also sounds to me to be an environmental dip CDI issue.

i have just looked at the carb it has a 10.2 jet in it.. and it has a mallosi air filter on it, also i have just ordered a new metrakit full exhaust for it i thought maybe its getting too much fuel beacuse the jet is so much bigger?

Sounds to me more like it might be running lean (this is a very bad thing). Could be overheating as you work the engine harder, causing it to die. Try fitting the original more restrictive air filter back on and see if that makes any difference.

*(My experience is with model aircraft 2 stroke engines, so I could be talking rubbish).
